"Sources tell Variety that Searchlight is in negotiations with Hostiles director Scott Cooper to direct the supernatural pic Antlers, which del Toro is producing. Del Toro has been a fan of Cooper’s for some time now, and the two were eager to work together.

Antlers was penned by Henry Chaisson & Nick Antosca and is based on the short story The Quiet Boy by Antosca. Searchlight recently acquired the supernatural horror spec that follows a young teacher who discovers that her troubled student’s father and younger brother harbor a deadly supernatural secret. Taking the boy into her care, the teacher must fight for their survival against horrors beyond imagination." SOURCE

I swear there was a post on this here. Guess I was wrong.

Anyway, I'm game. It sounds like an interesting change of pace for Cooper, as he usually does masculine focused gritty dramas (here, he's doing what sounds like a semi-fantastical horror film with a female lead). Having Del Toro behind your back is always a bonus, too,

Strange, I was pretty sure I had seen a thread as well. But I searched for both "Antlers" and "Scott Cooper", with and without quotation marks, and nothing came up. Well, if there's a thread already a moderator should delete this one ASAP.

I agree, it's nice to see Cooper branching out. I hope it's more of a commercial success for him. Despite respectable domestic earnings for Crazy Heart and Black Mass, none of his films made many waves at the box-office.

Just got an Email from my local library that my DVD of Hostiles is ready for pickup as I write this. This sounds like a promising horror flick, and as Cooper is great with actors I look forward to eventual casting news...

I found Scott Cooper tremendously underrated and I'm glad Hostiles is starting to get him a following. His films may not be perfect, be he's a remarkably gifted hand at cinematic language, his films are assured and often interesting.

Pretty phenomenal news.

Cooper is a great director of actors and Keri Russell just finished off one of the best performances in TV history.

I've noticed - even before the latest round of news concerning Keri Russell's casting - that basically every news site refers to this as a "Guillermo Del Toro production" in the headline. It annoys me a little bit, to be honest. Of course, Del Toro is more famous, and a very recent Oscar winner to boot, but it's not like Scott Cooper is a nobody.

What I like about a "Guillermo Del Toro production" is that he chooses to produce films by truly great or upcoming filmmakers, instead of the usual bit where an aging horror director will slap their "brand name" on any old piece of shit for an easy paycheck (Wes Craven comes to mind). And they all feel like something Guillermo might have made himself, even if he didn't have a hand in writing it (like Mama, rife with tons of Guillermo trademarks).

He's not working with Masanobu Takayanagi like he usually does? That's kind of a shame. Those two can paint some really pretty pictures.

I hope he re-teams with Max Richter to do the score, tho. The music for Hostiles was easily one of my favorite scores of that year.
