Watched 100 horror movies last year so I'll be giving it a miss this time. Can't wait to read what you all have been watching though.

Stuff I watched:

Judex

Not horror, but this is a highly stylized escapist crime caper from Georges Franju (Eyes without a face) that pays homage to the Louis Feuillade crime serials. It has a magical vibe with the use of illusions and tricks. Francine Berge as the femme fatale is magnificent.

Exhuma

Pretty damn good Korean horror thriller about evil spirits and exorcism rituals. A wealthy family with peculiar afflictions hires a ghostbusters team to solve their problems. The experienced geomancer (fancy feng shui man) played by Oldboy's Choi Min-Sik thinks the case, which calls for relocating a disgruntled ancestor, is too risky because of where the grave site is, but he is persuaded to by the other team members. They perform the traditional rituals, which offer a welcome change from the usual Christian exorcism rituals seen in movies, and shift the ancestor's coffin. But subsequent events lead to unleashing of a ferocious evil that must be defeated. The story is a little convoluted, but the movie is directed extremely well, and the confrontation scenes pack a good punch, mainly because the film makes you care for its characters. I caught it on Amz Prime, but it is coming out on BD and UHD in the US and other places.

I watched Two episodes from season 1 of The Munsters (1965-66) Closed Casket Collection: on DVD:
‘Rock-a-Bye Munster’ and ‘Low Cal Munster’.

Two episodes from 100 Years of Horror on DVD:
‘Baron Frankenstein’ and ‘Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde’.

Main features:

(4) Curse of Chucky (2013) DVD

Curse of Chucky is the best film in the series after Child’s Play (1988) and Child’s Play 2 (1990) due to it not having the poor comedy that the other four films had and the good decision to let Chucky be more of an evil killer doll again.

(5) Magic (1978) Blu-ray

Magic is a real gem. A dark and haunting psychological thriller with horror elements expertly directed by Richard Attenborough who secures excellent performances from the leading actors especially Anthony Hopkins.

Ray Alan and Lord Charles it is not! This psycho vent dummy is creepier than Chucky will ever be.

A must-see.

The Dark Night of the Scarecrow (1981)

A movie that a remember watching back in the 80’s, and holds up pretty well still.

Just saw this thread and realized that October/Halloween month has started. Weather has been still a bit summery here; you barely understand which month is which .
Really glad to see that we are once again back at it! I barely make it all through, but it's always a pleasant challenge!

I'll start this month with a 1st time viewing:

Probably stretching the definition of horror with The Plumber. It has elements of the genre for sure, just don't expect a bloodbath.

I also forgot how lousy the master on this blu-ray looks - artificial grain, poor cropping, recreated credits, possibly some upscaling - not very film-like, no doubt Weir's meddling.

#3 - Scanners

"There is one other thing... no one is to leave this room once the demonstration has begun. At this point, I'd like to call for volunteers."

Not Cronenberg's best work, but still worth watching. Some fantastic practical effects, especially in the opening scenes.

I watched Two episodes from season 1 of The Munsters (1965-66) Closed Casket Collection on DVD:
‘Tin Can Man’ and ‘Herman the Great’.

Two episodes from 100 Years of Horror (1996) a TV series hosted and narrated by Christopher Lee on DVD:
‘Werewolves’ and ‘Bela Lugosi’.

Two British films for the main features:

(6) Island of Terror (1966) Blu-ray

A modest, little sci-fi classic and one of my personal all time favourites that I’ve watched annually on a DVD-R for yonks. I was chuffed when 88 Films released it on Blu-ray a few weeks ago.

Terence Fisher directs the great Peter Cushing and a very good supporting cast who all play it straight bat. The creatures are early Dr Who/Blue Peter papier-mâché and the film is corny and goofy 1960’s fare but it’s well made, so entertaining and great fun.

(7) The Girl With All the Gifts (2016) Blu-ray

First time watch of this post apocalyptic sci-fi horror, an unusual and fresh take on the zombie genre. Good performances, great direction and powerful story. It’s grim and unique. I loved it.

Never quite made it to 31 but we try again!

1. Evil Dead Trap

Kicked things off with this wild Japanese slasher courtesy of the 88 Films disc.

Where to even begin? There's bits of everything here: giallo inspired, supernatural elements, Cronenbergian techno paranoia, a labyrinthian industrial setting, ultra creative kills, Raimi rush cam tracking shots, a great score, pops of colour and an Alien x Henenlotter special effect that manages to be both mean spirited and camp in equal measure. Loved it!

2. The Hitcher

Great blend of cat n mouse, suspense horror and 'road movie' action set pieces (ala Duel) with Hauer's great central performance.

3. Addams Family Values

I don't recall the first Addams Family film too well but this follow up plays out like a screwball comedy. The script is there purely as a vehicle for one liners and gags and only about 50% of it lands well but it's light enough entertainment. I like the visual contrast between their spooky home and the shenanigans of the summer camp though.

1.

Watched it 2 1/2 times on Tuesday evening One time back to back, and the third time I started with a German audio commentary but it was crap, so I turned it off. I only ever had a DVD, so this BD upgrade is great. Probably my third favorite Frankenstein after the Bride of Frank and the other Universal OG.

2.

My fourth favorite Frank. Terence Fisher was a genius.

3.

My lady never watched this. I'll probably watch this again till the end of the year. So much comfort this movie gives me.

4.

Very atmospheric, bourgeois vampires, that tends to be very traditional and a lot dreamy with nudity. Enjoyed it immensely.
