![]() Halloween Horror Month 2024 ![]() *Crypt door opens* Hello there, it's that time again for another Halloween Horror Month, attempting to watch 31 films in 31 days. If this will be your first year, or if you've joined in before, it's not a competition. There are no winners or losers, it's just a fun excuse to watch some Halloween &/or Horror films over October in the run up to Halloween. This will personally be my 13th year, unlucky for some, but I'm looking forward to re-watching some favourites as well as some newer titles I've added recently. If you're curious, I've my complete film lists of previous years listed below. What qualifies is up to you, while I've watched more conventional horror fare like Romero's dead trilogies, I've also watched more family orientated films with witches, ghosts etc (inc 'Casper' or the 'Adams Family' films last year). All I'd recommend is to keep to varied, if you watch something fairly dark, you may want to follow up with some more horror comedy titles. Also you may want to have personal sub-challenges for yourself, eg. one year I had 1 film per the last 31 years. Another handy tip would be using the 'My Movies' app sorted by Horror genre, a good way of seeing at a glance what you have, and you can also sort by runtime (useful if you inevitably get a little behind on 1-per-day or your own target). Being a blu-ray forum, you're likely going to watch a decent amount via disc, but don't feel limited to that if there's something on Netflix etc. Here are some Horror/Halloween titles currently available on BBC iPlayer: [Show spoiler] If watching some Horror/Halloween films over this month sounds fun, feel free to join in. The main thing is to just have fun, whether you end up watching 31 films, or only a handful, just pace yourself and enjoy some films or TV. Re-watch some old favourites and maybe try something new. I'll update the post below with the films I view throughout the month. I'm going to start with 'Invasion of the Body Snatchers' (1956). "Doctor! Will you tell these fools I am not crazy?! Make them listen to me before it's too late!" ![]() _______________________________________ The 12 previous years film lists; 2012 [Show spoiler] 2013 [Show spoiler] 2014 [Show spoiler] 2015 [Show spoiler] 2016 [Show spoiler] 2017 [Show spoiler] 2018 [Show spoiler] 2019 [Show spoiler] 2020 [Show spoiler] 2021 [Show spoiler] 2022 [Show spoiler] 2023 [Show spoiler] . Great to see this thread emerge from the grave again. It’s always intriguing to see what other folk are watching in October.
This is my 2nd year and I started last night with a couple of favourites from the dusty cobwebbed, blood-splattered, putrid smelling shelves of the horror section of my collection. So, here we go, THROW THE SWITCH YGOR! I started my HORROctober festival with two episodes from The Munsters (1965-66) Closed Casket Collection: Munsters Masquerade and My Fair Munster on DVD. ![]() One episode from 100 Years of Horror (1996) - ‘Dracula and his Disciples’ on DVD. ![]() Followed by the main feature, a classic Carpenter from the 1980’s: (1) Christine (1983) on Blu-ray. ![]() |

Lite-touch for me this year.
With Halloween Horror, Noirvember and Christmas all in succession, last year I was completely burned out by the time I got to Christmas and ended up watching hardly anything festive. My main viewing will be towards the end of the month. Already have THE HITCHER and (hopefully) THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT lined up, and then a few more that I just couldn't get to last year. Good luck everyone, love this thread as it heralds my favourite time of the year (Oct-Dec). Thanks to DaveSimonH for once again kicking things off! |

I kind of accidentally did this sort of challenge last year but from a distance - watched 30-odd horror films in a month, but didn't post them here as I somehow missed the forum thread at the time and just logged them all on Letterboxd instead.
I fully intend to partake here this year also. I've got a stack of films lined up already, and rough idea of the order I want to watch them in (but am prepared to be flexible when needed to keep the viewing varied). The main thing I'm trying to do this year is watch mainly non-US films, because they were hugely over-represented in my viewing last year. Though my 'lighter fare' options to sub in if I need to are mainly US. 1. Tetsuo: The Iron Man 2. La Llorona 3. The Horrible Dr. Hichcock 4. The Platform 2 5. The Thing 6. Encounter of the Spooky Kind 7. It's What's Inside 8. Witchfinder General 9. A Bay of Blood 10. Evil Dead Trap 11. Prey 12. Kill Baby... Kill 13. Tetsuo II: Body Hammer 14. The Phantom of the Monastery ![]() [Show spoiler]

Changed the start of my list, as I was always under the assumption that The Hitcher was a thriller, but it’s listed as horror on this site, so it was that that kicked off my list this year in the pre-October beginning last night.

I'll maybe watch another cut of Romero's Dawn - probably after the Criterion blu of Night; plus I've been saving the 88 Films Pete Walker set and Planet of the Vampires from Radiance for October. Also the Arrow blu of Silence/Lambs.
Oo-ooh, and The Hitcher, and The Wicker Man ![]() (That makes 13 already) |

Like you, I have the BFI BD of the superb classic film Invasion of the Body Snatchers. I have to mention the audio commentary with the principle stars of the film, Kevin McCarthy and Dana Wynter, recorded 50 years after the film was made is amazing to hear! Their recollections are so sharp and detailed, even after so many years. There are some excellent audio commentries out there, especially when it's with people with first hand experience who starred, wrote, directed, produced, edited etc in the film concerned. However, I have to say the Invasion of the Body Snatchers commentary is such a privilege to listen to and if I was to give rankings, I would give it the number 1 slot. I am going to print off your yearly film lists and carefully go through them. A core film for me to watch during the Halloween season is the 1983 film Halloween III: Season of the Witch. To get into the Halloween festive mood. ![]() I can't wait to see what your next film is. Last edited by Number 28; 10-01-2024 at 04:11 PM. |

Kind of you to say, but apart from starting the thread these past few years the rest is provided by fellow forum members. It's always interesting to see and read about what people are watching, and like the 'Last Watched/Bought Thread' can be a good introduction to some films you may not of heard of. As for what I personally watch each year, it's usually what I feel like on the day, often after scanning the cases or the covers via the 'My Movies' app. Although if I have other sub-challenges for myself, there may be a horror genre or film from a series that fits the bill, helping to narrow down the choice. I also now have a healthy enough collection of Horror on disc, where I'm not watching the same films each year, in fact I try to avoid it. So onto my 2nd film of the month, this one caught my eye today: #2 - 'Hatching' "What...What was that?", "I... I hatched it." ![]() First time viewing for me and happy to say I enjoyed it. Great practical effects work and the lead young actress Siiri Solalinna gave a great performance. Definitely worth a watch, especially for fans of body horror. The UK blu-ray includes English & English HOH/SDH subtitles (it's a Finnish film), unfortunately it includes no extras other than a trailer. _________________

Always interesting to see what other people are watching, I'll admit that Horror isn't exactly my favourite genre but I do enjoy it sometimes.
I watched Poison for the Fairies from ![]() Unfortunately I did not enjoy this film much at all. I'd picked it up after enjoying the Mexico Macabre release from Indicator as a complete blind buy. I watched the first film of the set and found it boring and devoid of atmosphere. Hopefully it can pick up with the other two, especially the last one, the premise of which sounded the most intriguing to me. |

I've not managed to do a horror every October on previous attempts, but will give it an attempt again this year.
1. Goal of the Dead (Dvd). Had it sitting around for years, and it actually turned out to be pretty decent. 2. Carry on Screaming! (Dvd) 3. Macario (Youtube) Loose adaptation of the Soldier and Death folk tale. Well worth seeing. 4. Scooby-Doo and Batman - The Brave and the Bold (DVD) 5. Phantom Call (HK VCD) 6. Sleepaway Camp II (Anchor Bay R1 dvd). Revisiting this one for the first time in years. Valerie Hartman more than makes this worth watching. 7. A Pocket Film of Superstitions 8. Night of the Demons 2 (88films BD) 9. Lost After Dark (Metrodome dvd) Another one I picked up from Poundland ages ago, and had sitting around. This was terrible. 10. Gaming night - Horror Adventure VR. Was passable entertainment until bugs ruined it and I had to give up. 11. Prince of Darkness (Studio Canal BD) 12. Alison's Birthday (Severin BD) 13. Howling III (prism leisure dvd) Last edited by Eidolon; 10-13-2024 at 10:16 PM. Reason: Update |

Last year was my first go at 31 horror films in a month; I managed 19. This year I'm going to give it another shot. I don't expect to make it all the way to 31 but hopefully I'll improve on last year. As much as possible, I'm aiming for first watches (which will shockingly include all of the Friday the 13ths, almost all of the Child's Plays, and most of the "classic" Halloweens), with a few classics rewatched along the way.
1. Child's Play (original) A lot more fun than I thought it'd be. Chris Sarandon is so like Mark Ruffalo, it's uncanny. 2. Halloween III: Season of the Witch Nothing with Tom Atkins is a total bust. And Dan O'Herlihy is having great fun (a real Irish accent!). But the plot nonsensical and, more damningly, the scares are pretty nonexistent. The score was the best thing about it. Disappointing.
