Default Dolby Digital EX 5.1

Hey Guys -

I had a question regarding some blu ray movie audio formats...Sorry if this is the wrong forum..

I have a Dali Ikon 5.1 setup, with ikon 6 as fronts...I have the denon 3800 blu ray player which does not decode dolby digital EX 5.1....When I was shopping for some blu ray movies for my collection, some of the descriptions on the back of the case, under audio, it says Dolby Digital EX 5.1?

What will my Denon player automatically play then? this is confusing me

Do all blu rays have the dolbyHD? And Do all blu rays have this, no matter what the back of the case says?

Can someone explain this to me? And as of 2 date, what is the best format for a war movie, I like to be in the action with all the thumps and bumps...Such as the movie we were soldiers, great movie... I suppose dolbyHD, right
thanks guys

DD 5.1 EX is/was a dvd lossy audio option... its on the star wars prequels and some things.. it basically is DD 5.1, but supposed to be a little better on a 6.1 setup.. pretty much same thing. So yes there are blu rays without lossless audio, the Mission Impossibles come to mind.. as well as whatever you're seeing DD 5.1 EX only on

thanks Mc -

Will this still work on my denon blu ray player, since this denon does not decode dolby digital EX 5.1? And what would the player play by default, since it cant play DD EX 5.1?

Your player will still play the codec, but it will only be a core 5.1 track. What movie were you looking at? I've never seen a Blu-ray offer an EX track (probably because I only pay attention to lossless tracks).

No, not all movies have Dolby TrueHD. It the movie has a TrueHD, DTS-HD HR, DTS-HD MA, or an Uncompressed PCM track, it will be listed on the back of the case.

As for your last question; all three uncompressed formats are going to be the same quality.

I'm sure I won't be the first to suggest Black Hawk Down, which contains nearly constant action. Gorgeous, gritty picture quality and stunning uncompressed PCM 5.1 channel audio.

I second Band of Brothers. Although sci-fi, Starship Troopers is great as well. Flags Of Our Fathers and Letters From Iwo Jima sound great as well, even though Flags Of Our Fathers does not feature a lossless track. Although not a guns blazing war movie but rather a life at see during times of war movie, you can't go wrong with Master and Commander.

Although I'm still holding out on Black Hawk Down and Master and Commander in hopes for a re-release that contains all the features from their respective collector's edition DVD sets.

It is helpful for you to read A Guide to Home Theater Audio CODECS. It has a sticky in Audio section. The following is from that thread:
Quote:
DOLBY DIGITAL EX (THX SURROUND EX) AND DTS EXTENDED SURROUND (DTS-ES)
In November 2001, Dolby Laboratories began to license the Dolby Digital EX (jointly developed by Lucasfilm’s THX division and Dolby Laboratories.) Shortly afterwards, DTS introduced DTS-ES. Both Dolby Digital EX and DTS-ES introduced a new surround back channel. However, the information in the back channel (either one or two speakers) was encoded into the surround left and surround right channels (similar to the way the center channel is encoded for Dolby Pro-Logic). The extended surround formats are fully backward compatible.

Because the surround back channel is not a discrete channel, the correct way to refer to these two formats is “Dolby Digital 5.1 EX Matrix” and “DTS 5.1 ES Matrix”. It would be misleading to refer to them as 6.1-channel or 7.1-channel formats.

DTS-ES Discrete 6.1: A true 6.1-channel format
DTS-ES optionally supports a discrete full-bandwidth surround back channel, independent from the surround left and surround right channels. This is called DTS-ES Discrete 6.1.
A few examples of Blu-ray movies that have Dolby Digital ES audio are:
  • Stir of Echoes
  • The Punisher also has 6.1 DTS-ES Discrete Audio
  • Stargate
