Seriously. Something comparable would be owning a Ferrari but never driving it past 25mph because you're afraid of getting a ticket.

That sucks you don't like DTS, I love it, as a matter of fact, I have my BDP decode DD and then output LPCM just so it sound more like DTS after the receiver does its processing...

However, that isn't to say that it won't happen in the future. Since there are Dolby formats that support up to 16 discreet channels, it is quite possible that we could see them in the future.

Regardless, having two subwoofers 'feels' so much better when watching big explosions.
I think that is because the purpose of adding the multiple subwoofers is to balance out the dead spots created in your room when using just one subwoofer.

Since when has a common place inaccuracy replaced accuracy?

I seriously doubt you will see more than one discrete LFE channel in any film format system. Acoustically it is bad for small rooms, and secondly it is not needed as the one LFE provides for enough low frequency power for any film soundtrack.

If you guys want to keep depating my signature, then let's take this to another post or to PM. It's not fair to the original poster to discuss something completely irrelevant to his questions.

Both the receiver and my blu-ray player have DRC and they are both on. Dialogue Boost is at MAX on the receiver. Midnight mode is ON as well. I have also already boosted the center speaker up a few notches above the side speakers. Still no luck. Even freakin' Role Models gave me problems last night.

Do people really like the insane extremes that DTS has? Barely audible dialogue explodes to knock you out of your chair when a song is played over the soundtrack? Doesn't make any sense. The worst was when I watched Sunshine. Great movie and a kick butt soundtrack but unfortunately I keep having to adjust the levels every couple of minutes because of the drastic range. (If I remember correctly, that one at least had the Dolby option).

I would just assume that my receiver is crap but I really enjoy what it does with Dolby so I have a hard time dropping at least $400 to replace it and the speakers.

EDIT: Also the received comes with one of those mics to automatically set it levels compared to where I usually sit in the room. Doesn't seem to help much (no surprise).
I agree to an extent, dialogue is always quiter than the action scenes. If you have a a decent center channel speaker,i find it helps a lot.You could also turn up your tv louder, you might be able to hear dialogue better that way,at lower receiver volumes.

Jeff's reference to his 5.2 speaker system is entirely correct usage. He specified that he is referring to his speaker configuration--not the sound, not the delivery format. He made no reference to LFE channels, as it's irrelevant to the number of subwoofers being used.

And yes, Blu-ray and HD DVD are both able to deliver an LFE2 channel. Useless, but possible.

Do you still run the sound through the TV when you are using a 5.1 system? I always disabled it because sometimes it seemed like a sort of echo effect.

Except that this has nothing to do with whether it was encoded in DTS or Dolby. It's just differences in how these movies were mixed.

Which is the point of his post. He's poking holes in mugupo's "theory".

BINGO!!!!!

This is why suggesting one lossless codec or PCM is better than the other is entirely ridiculous.

It does sort of echo,i suppose that might be annoying, but mine is too loud to notice the tv sound.

Okay... So does that mean I must turn up the volume to hear the dialogue in same levels like Atmos and get hit by high powered highs of DTS or should I hear DTS tracks at the same level?

DDS Is not similar to DTS. Has anyone had sound disparity issues?

Default DRC is good, actually.

Indeed, one is a game texture container, and the other is a movie sound codec.

Regarding the ancient OP, AC-3 (as well as EAC-3 and TrueHD) does indeed have more DRC metadata than DTS (DCA and DTS-HD), making an AC3 track sound better on TV speakers than a DTS track. IME, modern receivers do good enough job at compressing DTS and PCM tracks (when set to "min" range or equivalent) to make this a moot point, though. I also find that it's easier to appreciate wider dynamic ranges when using earphones or headphones than speakers (regardless of speaker count); a lot of the difficulty hearing comes from room acoustics.

And no, I don't care so much about annoying my neighbors as much as I do ensuring my hearing lasts.
