Ok I know this is going to sound like a stupid question but I just got through watching TOP GUN for the first time and the ending left me confused as to what just happened kind of thing. Spoiler tags going up in case someone ventures into this thread and hasn't seen it yet.

I'm just confused and I know I'm reading way too much into this but I can't help it, just the way my mind thinks.

It's in the movie:

"No one's been up against a MiG28 before."

They needed super pilots, because in that movie's chain of reality, the MiG28 was faster, way more maneuverable and totally unknown.

I've heard rumors of a sequel to Top Gun where Maverick goes back to be a teacher at the academy and has to deal with a rookie female pilot.

Two reasons:

1) He was the only pilot to complete a 4G negative dive against the mig. Inverted nonetheless. SKILL.

2) His old man used to fly with the head honcho of the school. NEPOTISM.

Even the Iceman had to give his props to the guy. He can be his wingman anytime, after all.

Seriously-- I never appreciated this film-- pure cheese propaganda made at a time when RAMBO was very popular and brainless war flicks (yeah, the military is all fun and games like it is for Tom Cruise!!

That's the BEST part of these older 80's movies, I love it, seriously.

The best example of this is Navy Seals. Charlie Sheen is possibly the most inept special forces guy ever. He blows two missions, and even gets one of his teammates KILLED by being reckless and doing ridiculous things on every mission in the film. Yet there is never any accountability and he comes back and "saves the day" at the end and is a big hero. The lunacy of it is astounding, but way too much fun not to watch unfold.
