Talking Just got reinstated at AVS - any bets on how long before the next suspension?

My latest post at AVS. I have been reinstated for about 1/2 an hour after my third suspension. Here is my latest post, and I'll let you guess how long it'll take for suspension number four:

Sony's Blu-ray format is toast -- barring drastic action no one believes is going to happen (like $199 Blu-ray players from JVC). Sony thought they could use PS3 as a "trojan horse" to drive Blu-ray installations, become the leading game console, and charge a premium across the board. By last winter it was obvious they gambled and lost: PS3 came in considerably below sales targets, lost a HUGE amount, was singled out in the financial reports dragging the entire division deeply into the red, and came in Number 3 in the console game market.

International Sales Rule Number 1: you must be number 1, or number 2; there is no margin in being number 3 in a commodity market. Sony is number 3.

As for Blu-ray, they never quite managed studio dominance, merely an unequal parity: Universal vs Sony, Warner and Paramount in the middle, Fox and MGM kinda sidelined -- and release volumes fairly close. Then Paramount jumped ship, and Fox returned but guess what? Blu-ray found itself second in number of titles and box office. Yes, they maintained a lead in actual unit sales thanks to the PS3 base but not nearly enough to reflect the supposed "installed base lead". By this measure, 2:1 was a disaster in all eyes except the PR department.

Finally consumer acceptance comes with consumer friendly pricing and if its not going to be the discs its gonna hafta be the hardware, right? So Sony strikes a celebrated end-cap deal with Target to sell Sony Blu-ray only players at $499 (check the press release, that's the deal) from Oct 1 through end 2007. Disney goes on a Disney Blu-ray tour of 8 (yes, eight) malls "across America".

Meanwhile Toshiba, and HD DVD, steadily like the turtle, not the hare, push lower hardware prices, more expanded software titles, and broader shelf space in many stores -- for hardware and software. Look at the choice in hardware: Blu-ray has 2 or 3 brands at roughly $499, all with the same features and only Sony can get shelf space universally; HD DVD has 1 brand but three different price points and feature sets (aka choice!) and is equally well represented as Sony. Sure, you can buy Samsung but is it any different than the BDP-S300? And now we have confirmation: HD DVD will deliver a new price point -- under $199 for the "off brand" set.

Give away the razors, sell the blades ... that's why HD DVD disc sales will overcome Blu-ray by the spring.

A final reminder: studios operate out of self-interest, ultimately, and not to a blind devotion to red or blue packaging. Allegiances are defined by bottom line performance -- like Laser Discs and UMD, studios will invest for a while and then settle in where the real future starts paying off today.

The fat lady is about to take centre stage and she won't be humming a Disney tune or whistling while she works. Is that the glint of Transformer breastplates I see on Brunnhilde, a yonder?
There is so much FUD here, I don't know where to begin. I don't have an hour to disect this work of art. Rookie FUDmeisters need to go back to school for a slicker presentation. I guess that you like HD DVD propaganda and don't look at the true software title sales, from week to week. If HD DVD wins one week this year, it'll be a small miracle.

How many demerit points for me this time, admins? I feel like John Spartan, in Demolition Man, getting fined for every opinion that is not HD DVD Politically Correct.

Anytime you ask a question like, "How many demerit points for me this time, admins?", you are asking for trouble. I am betting on an outright ban. No more suspensions. I'd ban ya just becaue of your question, (nothing personal).

"Sony's Blu-ray format is toast"

this is exactly why i cannot view AVS anymore as a good web site anymore
Blu-Ray is not just SONY's format. if you notice the ANTI-BLU-RAY posts all refer to the format as SONY's they point the finger as just SONY has sometheing to loose, or its SONY's new Betamax, or sony's new UMD...see that right there is the problem.

BLU-RAY is not JUST A FORMAT FROM SONY..the ANTI-BLU-RAY AVS SUPPORTERS just don't get it...blu-ray is not A betamax or A UMD SONY Optical format Sony is and has not been the only one makeing blu-ray OPTICAL DRIVES AND OPTICAL PLAYERS.

Even back in 2003 more than just SONY in Asia and in Japan made a blu-ray recorder when they were first released back in 2003 and ,WHEN THERE IS MORE CE support for this format than the HD DVD format, but yet the AVS ANTI-BLU-RAY supporters at AVS act like HD DVD is the industry standard and blu-ray is not, that is what gets me .

A agree with the don't waste your time there option.

Sometimes it's fun to be stunned by the crap you can read there but then again it's actually sad, particularly if you know what the site was like a few years ago.

I agree with the "don't waste your time there" conclusion. I still look in there a little bit, but mainly because breaking developments sometimes show up there before I see them elsewhere. But the FUD ratio is so high that reading threads there is largely a waste of time.

the soon you got banned there, the better. It shows the world that you are with BLU, the winning format.

As of me, I wouldn't waste my time there, but glad somebody is standing there as BD supporter.

There is an underllying reason for me to continue posting there. Sometimes, people who are undecided to what format to support, read many of these posts. If there is no one willing to refute, some of the outrageous lies, misconceptions, etc., than they may indeed take it as fact and buy in to the wrong format. This can cause a snowball effect and possibly cause a self fullfilling prophecy of HD DVD coming out on top. How many people could be honestly swayed? Hundreds? Thousands? If left unchecked? It's like catching a cold and then passing it around in the general public. These people must be challenged, with the truth!

One other example that I saw over there, that was quite dishonest. Someone had posted a Future Shops flyer, showing a $300.00 price difference between a Sony and a Toshiba model. I took the time to pick up that same flyer and noticed that the $599.99 Sony was 1080p and the $299.99 player was only 1080i compliant. Another model, just below the $299.99 Toshiba was $449.99 and that was 1080p compliant. This is the FUD that is dangerous, because it takes an actual brick and morter business and manipulates the ad to appear to prove a false point. This is where we lose people who are undecided, because it looks legit. You cannot read the small print on the flyer on line. Unless you have one, right in front of you, than you cannot refute the argument. We need good warriors to go over there and fight the good fight, for truth, or we become extinct, because we don't care enough to fight for our cause.

This is the kind of thing we are seeing in Canada. It's hard to deny this is going to have a huge impact on sales. This is in a flyer distributed NATIONALLY. $599 vs. $299 is a no brainer.

Fortunately there are BD supporters who have the stomach to do this. I just can't force myself any more.

It gets time consuming, believe me. They are like a bunch of Jackals, once you challnge them. You better be ready with facts, because they will call you out. I do that to them quite often, as well. Some of their leaders are quite obnoxious and it feels good to knock them down a peg.

Yes, they have a tendency to make unsupported assertions, and when you question what their support is, they say "Prove I'm wrong!" Horrible bunch, indeed.

I got this flyer, does the $299 Toshiba even SAY it's 1080i on the flyer?

The funny thing is typically sent out with this flyer is the Best Buy flyer, which the same week was giving away Samsung 1200's for FREE with any Samsung 46" or larger TV

Also any person looking objectively with this will see one side, having Sony, Samsung, Pioneer for BR (CE Support ). And Toshiba, Toshiba, Toshiba for the HD-DVD side.

It is very clear that HD-DVD *IS* Toshiba's format only. They make it a point to say so even in their commercials. It's glaringly obvious in ad's like these. For people who do investments for the family, it's clear that BR is the way to go with more CE support. The CE support gives faith in a format, and really negates the price advantage as it gives the impression of a fire sale.

I totally agree with what you say here, I'm just not sure how effective your post (quoted below) will be at what you state you want to accomplish.

I have done this before in other forums (not related to HDM) and have found that drowning the competition with cold hard facts to yield the best results. Remember that your real target audience is not those you are debating with but rather those who stumble onto these sites looking for real information. These are people who know little about HDM (most won't even know what FUD means) and need real facts to form an opinion. Also with very rare exception you will not have any effect on those participating in this with you. And if they come at you rather than what you say, you got them if just stick it out with facts.

Calling out the admin/moderators isn't really the best way to continue. Just continue posting the facts (something HD DVD fanatics despise) and carry on. If not, just leave the site. You've got to be able to take the good with the bad. In general AVS is a great site aside from the HDM area which still has some value after filtering out the trash.

You are coorect about that, but I got suspended for something trivial, when the other side gets away with slamming my nationality. I don't even know if that thread still exists, or did they delete it.

Well that is pretty dispicable. It is shame that has happened that way. I've always asked Mark (during his quitting and his come back thread) and other mods for stricter neutral enforcement, but it doesn't happen.
