Default DTS-HD and Dolby TrueHD on PS3

I have a question about these: I have no speakers and will have the PS3 set up in my room, connecting the system directly to my television set, which has built-in speakers. Will I be able to use these audio settings without a receiver?

yes, you have to select Linear PCM as your HDMI audio output.

I'm sorry, I think it would be safe to say that I'm much more video savvy than I am audio savvy; what does this mean?

Settings - Video Settings - BD / DVD Audio Output Format (HDMI) - Linear PCM

Oops, sorry. I don't have a reciever. I was reading this guide and this guide, which both seem to imply that to use DTS-HD or Dolby TrueHD, you would need a reciever and that simply running an HDMI cable from the PS3 to the HDTV is not enough, Linear PCM or not. But this isn't true? (Bear with me; aside from actually knowing the truth about these audio settings, I want to learn about them. I don't even have a PS3 Slim yet, but hope to get one in a few months.)

...you won't get "surround sound", but yes, your TV is capable of 2.0 (stereo) PCM.

And PCM meaning the ability to use DTS-HD and Dolby TrueHD, albeit without surround sound?

pop in a movie, select the audio track and hit the select button on the PS3 remote. It will show you what audio format is playing.

whether or not you will notice any difference with the new formats from your TV speakers...I doubt it. So in the long run, I would definitely consider buying a receiver + speakers.

Well, yeah I know that, but I figure the better, the better. I don't have the money for all that stuff right now.

understandable.

...a good beginner 5.1 setup will start around the $400-$500 mark. But save up as much as you can.

As what is mentioned above, your player will put out the audio you select. However You wont hear anything other then plain ol' stereo. (left and right direction) you won't HEAR anythign diferent. Just which side the sound comes form left or right.
