Default if you bought PS3 for Blu-ray movies...

and only BD movies, will you ever replace it with a stand alone player? If so roughly how long are you going to wait.

I personally have PS3 and boughit primarily for BD playback. I do want a stand alone but not until there is a really good player for about $300

I'm not a full-time gamer, and only recently found out that PS3 is backwards-compatible with most PS2 games.

I may upgrade to a standalone in the future if Profiles and audio improves, but for the immediate lack of one, I'll settle for a Blu player that plays Kingdom Hearts II.

I just got it about 2 weeks ago and I have 0 games and 9 Blu-ray disc's. It seems to be a really good player to me. It's faster than any other player I have setup. The only drawback IMO is the lack of an IR-port or Sony made USB IR-adapter as they want to push their Bluetooth remote. I would pay the same amount for a Sony firmware supported USB IR-dongle that would allow me to use my Universal Remote. If I was to replace it with a stand alone player it would have to be region free for regular DVDs and fast. Hopefully OPPO Digital will make one once the format war is over.

I wouldn't replace it, unless someone comes up with a Blu-ray player with a better video/audio quality. Which is kinda hard to do of course, since all the PS3 is doing is decoding what's on the disc and delivering it over a digital connection (HDMI). Because it's not making up pixels that don't exist (unlike upconversion), or doing a digital-to-analog conversion (e.g., multi-channel analog audio), the quality of the result cannot really change; unless you screw up something royally (like the 1st get Samsungs and the noise reduction chip that you couldn't disable), the result is pretty much the same.

The only question mark is DTS-HD MA decoding. If the PS3 never gets a firmware upgrade for this feature, I might get a player that can decode it.

enjoy

I got mine just for the Blu-ray, its the cheapest Blu-ray player around I also got the Blu-ray remote at the same time, but that hasn't stopped me download GT and some other demos. I must admit I got 2 games when I purchased it - COD3 and (I'm on about lvl4) and Resistant Fall of Man which I've not played yet, but really they are just lying around because I use my pc for gaming. In the 3 months that I have owned it I have bought 22 Blu-ray tiles There is no stopping me and have more on perorder The only time I would buy a new blu ray player is if there was one that plays CDs better and was around the price that this one was.

I heard rumors that firmware version 2.0 will add support for DTS-HD MA and possibly via bitstream. I've also heard the rumor thats its impossible to do for the PS3 (doesn't sound right considering how much a beast the PS3 is). So, anyone have any idea which is true?

nope, unless blu-ray players get ridiculously cheap (say under $100). I also bought a 2 year replacement plan, so if my ps3 does die out just by normal use then I will get a replacement $500 PS3 (or whatever winds up being the closest to that price).

PS3 already has the ability to output via bitstream. I doubt there will be any issue because unlike other blu-ray players, the PS3 is like a small computer, hence adaptable. Cell processor baby!

This is wrong. The PS3 cannot pass an undecoded DTS-HD MA bitstream via HDMI. At the moment, it can decode or passthrough the DTS core only. It's been said by some insiders that the PS3 can never pass MA bitstream because of the HDMI chip it uses.

Well, I would be happy if it decoded to PCM and passed through 5.1 or greater PCM over HDMI.

I will be purchasing a stand-alone probably early next year once there are a number of 1.1/2.0 compatible players on the market. I won't be replacing the PS3 tho, that will just be used on the TV in my room instead.

I will get a dedicated Blu-ray player for sure... but only when there's a quality one for $200. So probably 18-24 months? Next Christmas at the earliest anyway.

I really prefer tray-loading though, and since my receiver doesn't take HDMI I'm stuck using the lower audio options since the PS3 lacks the 7.1 audio outs.

I'm very happy with the video quality so far though!

Same here, $300-$350, but it has to have TrueHD, DTS-HD MA & LPCM processing. No reason to buy one without it.

I might move to a stand alone if it did everything the PS3 can and will do, plus play DVD-Audio discs. Analog outs would be nice, too.

i picked my ps3 up mainly for bd playback and yeah like you guys im most likely gonna wait to pick up a stand alone... the only thing im gonna say about the ps3 is that it generates so much heat so you cant really tuck it away somewhere like im guessing you could a standalone

Well I wrote out a long response to this, but accidentally erased it... so I'll make a shorter summary..

The PS3 does SO much more than we thought it could, we use it for almost everything short of watching TV. (music, games, internet, movies files, movies, etc.). We can only see it doing more in the future, and so we will not buy a stand-alone player UNLESS that player has a capability the PS3 does not, such as 3D playback of all existing DVDs and Blu-rays (like the one rumored to be in development). Anything short of that will not be able to replace our PS3.

even though my ps3 is primarily used for movies and as much as i love it, i will eventually get a standalone player too. no sense chewing up 300W just to play a movie.

I bought my PS3 at release time (took home a raincheck and got it a week later) and only use it for Blu Ray (and DVD.) I extended the warranty to 3 years so I may replace it after that .. if it ever stops working.

When the fan noise finally drives me insane. But seriously not until there are decent sub-$100 players and/or the format war ends.
