The orginal doesn't hold up when compared with the sequel. You're looking at a failed marriage interwoven with storm chasing and by today's standards, bad CGI.
You're looking at Twister with rose tinted glasses... The movie theater sequence alone gives this a leg up. |

They're both great, but I'll give the leg up to Twisters in one respect. The story.

I think the various plot points and character motivations is improved in Twisters.
![]() I'm not dogging Twister, and I'm one of the few who defends the divorce subplot that others think is thin and irrelevant to the story. I won't get into that, though. Not sure what the big offense is in saying that Twisters' story improves upon the first film. That in no way implies that Twister had a bad story. |

Twister is great, but some of the dialog is a little goofy now. "That's a very good thing" <awkward glance at each other>.Hits differently now, along with other things.
Twisters is the same level of "decent story to move things along", but I dunno...feels more...grounded? Maybe? I dunno. I can't put one over the other. They're both great. |

![]() Seriously though, neither movie is deep, or even good, but there were so many things in Twisters that were just annoying to me, not the least of which the contrived going home portion in the middle, with Cowboy showing up for reasons, that just ground things to a halt. The first one didn't stray too far from "roller coaster ride go brrrr." I enjoyed both, don't get me wrong, but if we must analyze two trivial, surface stories trying to get us from one set piece to the next, the first one wins by a nose. ...but I digress... I've said it before but the characters in Twisters are the most basic cardboard cutouts you could ever write. The story and everything else is fine but those people were just incredibly boring. Put that up against all the different personalities from the first one with much better actors (even though I do like Glen Powell) and it's much more entertaining when not focusing on the disaster sequences.

Just watched it yesterday and I came here for the audio as well, not knowing all the fuss about it.
I thought there were great surround effects and great use of overheads, but each time we're close to a tornado (or inside it), it's like the dynamic range compresses like crazy. I thought the Dynamic Range EQ was on for some reason (it was not). Flying objects that you would expect to hit hard when they crash have only a limited impact (soundwise). And yeah, I did crank the volume up. I understand it's to simulate how deafening it must be, but coming from the first movie's bombastic Atmos track, I was a bit disappointed. On the plus side, there was no lack on LFE, and PQ was great. I also happen to have liked the movie ![]() |

I finally watched this film last night on Prime and am just now glancing at this forum, but I also thought that the overall story and character development in this film was better than in Twister.
Both are solid, fun, but not amazing movies. *ducks* |

Just watched this the other night on Prime or tried to.
It was sooo horrible I had to turn it off 3/4th of the way through. Bad in every which way... Cannot believe people actually find this to be good at all. |
