It may have already been mentioned in this topic, but the 2006 film "Miami Vice" is also and above all a semi-remake of the episode "Life is Dust" from the TV series "Robbery Homicide Division" produced by Michael Mann in 2002-2003.

I like that Mann went his own direction and didnt copy and paste from the 80's version of the show that was on normal TV.

The 2006 movie had some iconic scenes imo that make it a good watch, but that is just my opinion. I always enjoy a darker take on things, a more adult or real world approach.

Yes, if you're remaking something - it should be because you have something new or different to add to it, or because what you're remaking didn't quite work the first time around.

The thing is, imo Miami Vice is so entrenched in the era of when it was made (style, clothes, visuals, soundtrack, score...) that if you remove those elements from it - there's not much left. Then it's just a standard stylish crime thriller.

Then again - we just had a Shogun series remake last year, that was universally acclaimed by both critics and audiences. They didn't really attempt to distance themselves from the 1980s series. It's almost as if they ignored that the novel had already been adapted for the small screen and focused entirely on making the best adaption from the source material that they could envision - primarily in Japanese. And it worked.

Yes, looks like they’re calling it a remake and not a reboot

Its not really a franchise which I can see working that well based on camp nostalgia personally as it was never wilfully camp like a lot of 80's pulp stuff.

Perhaps also you could say Mann' film was also just a bit too early? 80's nostalgia was really only just starting to kick off in the mid 00's and it wasnt until the 2010's it really hit the mainstream.

The TV series was created by Anthony Yerkovich, not Michael Mann.

IMDB says the following:
Quote:
"Miami Vice" follows two undercover detectives back on the mean streets of Miami, Florida, re-united after 40 years.
Does this mean Don Johnson is back?
