I won't be shocked if it's from the same master that 88 Films used for their region B release. Kino's release would make it accessible for region A customers.

The Whip and the Body (Special Edition) has now been moved to February, and the HTF schedule has been updated to mention that it will be sourced from the same 4K scan / 2K restoration from 88 Films.

DVDBever reviews the new Kino release. While not perfect, it's a big improvement over the previous Kino release.

What would be helpful is a comparison of this release to the 88 Films one. It certainly looks the same at a quick eyeball, but I wonder if there are any reasons to own it if you already have the bad Kino release and the 88 Films release?? Probably just "being able to listen to the Tim Lucas commentary while not looking at the blue transfer."

You're in for a treat then. This is one of his best. Darken the room and let it sweep you away.

I totally agree. I've always felt this film's more akin to a symphony, than a narrative A to B movie. Its visual and aural assault on the senses, meted out so languorously, is absolutely seductive.

Couldn't have put that better if I tried!

It's one of the probably three Bava flicks I return to the most. It's incredible that it turned out as wonderful as it is, given Bava clashed with the producer and wasn't 100% happy with the final product because of the former's interference. It's hard to imagine it being even better than it already is.

KinoLorber replaced the incorrect transfer with the 88Films transfer
12 March 2024, the day of your post. They even identify it as the
same transfer:

" 2023 4K Scan and 2K Restoration by 88 Films "

https://kinolorber.com/product/the-w...pecial-edition

The opening shot is problematic. It's a process shot. It will never
look perfect, but it only lasts a few seconds. One can't judge the
entire film by the opening shot. The film itself looks fine.

Right, I knew they used the same transfer from the Dvd Beaver review that I was responding to. I was saying I wish they'd done a detailed comparison cause I'm guessing they didn't use the exact same encode so there could be compression differences, and I was also curious about extras difference between this new Kino and the old one. How different is the Tim Lucas commentary, etc. I'm still thinking there's no point in buying it if you have both the old Kino and the 88 Films release but I'm not sure.

88Films for the win. The transfer is a revelation and there's bountiful quality extras. And if you're a packaging person, that aspect is quite lovely too.

Which audio do peeps recommend for a first time watch? Does Lee do his own English dubbing?

Lee did sadly not do his own dubbing, and among fans it is commonly accepted that the Italian du is superior in this case. Bava only worked on the Italian dub himself, and the Italian dub features more extensive atmospheric sound effects (like the howling of the wind) than the English.

That said, the English dub is by no means bad, and I watched it in English many times before I finally was able to get my hands on a DVD with the Italian track back in the day.
