Blu-ray Archduke

Watched this last night. I was ready to ***** about the runtime, but the whole movie was smooth sailing. It never felt overlong. Besides Kerry Condon's supporting turn and Hans Zimmer's exciting score, what appealed to me the most is that there's very little fat in the narrative - sure, Hayes' troubled past is mentioned a lot, but it's not dwelt upon to the point of hindering the forward momentum of what is essentially a very, very uncomplicated plot. Along with Matt Reeves and Gareth Edwards, it seems that Joseph Kosinski can do no wrong when trusted with huge budgets. 3 stars.

Curious to see if we'll get a ramp-up of sequel talk on this or not. There was a little chatter around the time this debuted, and my interpretation was that Kosinski is looking to the next endeavor, but that doesn't mean they couldn't get him back I suppose.
As has been said by others, one of the real achievements by this movie was establishing that in F1, your real rival is your teammate. They are the barometer against which you're measured by most others, as they are using the (more or less) same equipment and management style. But repeating that theme in a F1 Part 2 may make it feel too similar to the first movie. Plus, that opening scene with the [Show spoiler] was fantastic and I was immediately wondering when we can get that movie. ![]() |

Absolutely don't want a sequel. But I do want to see Sonny Hayes show up for little reason in other racing disciplines.
FIA cinematic universe if you will... |

It's already a point of friction for people to be envisioning professionals in their 60s racing in something of this caliber (maybe in sports cars, but not in F1, IndyCar, or NASCAR in the modern world). Even de-aging them a decade is a leap; the oldest current F1 driver (Alonso) is 44. But, I do think the "issue" can be solved if they shift Pitt's role. For example, using a film like Moneyball as inspiration and having Brad Pitt take over as team principal from Kaspar Smolinski. I think it'd be a big question mark on Liberty Media and F1's willingness to just use the F1 movie's momentum for a spiritual sequel centered on a different sport. Depends on what the agreements look like, I assume. |

I saw this in the theater, and I am glad I did. This movie must be seen on the big screen to be fully appreciated.
The action scenes are top-notch. You really feel immersed in the race with most of the action filmed from cameras mounted right on the car. To enhance this immersion, I pushed myself into the back of my theater seat by pushing the heels of my feet against the ground whenever the race car was accelerating. I especially liked the graphic overlays where when either Sonny Hayes or Joshua Pearce advanced in position, you saw their leaderboard indicator fly upwards like the elevator shooting skyward in the Tower of Terror. Hans Zimmer wrote an excellent score for this film, where the electronic music represents the car and the orchestra represents the driver. Sonny Hayes was a master strategist in one race by intentionally triggering cautions so Joshua Pearce could save his tires and make fewer pit stops, thus advancing in position. Because of this film, I now finally understand how the Drag Reduction System (DRS) works because I have seen it in action. The metal flap in the rear spoiler can be flattened in a split second, allowing for less air resistance and faster acceleration. Extra bonus-Lewis Hamilton was one of the producers and played an important on-screen role at the end. The script needed a little work. If Sonny Hayes had just won the Rolex 24 at Daytona when the F1 representative met him, couldn't he have joined the team at the very start of the F1 season instead of in the middle? That could have enabled the film to feature more races, such as the Monte Carlo race and the race at the Circuit of the Americas (COTA). Overall, it's an excellent film. Here's a merchandise idea. Apple Computer should make a limited edition set of laptop computers with the F1 logo printed on the F1 function key, and build the exterior cover of the laptop using carbon fiber. |

He could be an F1 team principal and still find time to participate in other races. Not all of them, but some of them. The Rolex 24 at Daytona, for example, takes place in January, while the F1 season typically begins in March.
