Default PS3 firmware and PlayStation Network

Do I need the latest firmware in order to sign in to the PlayStation Network (PSN)?

The latest firmware on my PS3 is 2.76, which I downloaded and installed offline. I read that some folks were having issues logging in to the PSN after the 3.00/3.01 firmware was installed, and I was wondering if the firmware update was compulsory before I could access all PSN services?

Yes, if you would like to login to the PSN you have to have the latest firmware. I so far have not encountered any issues. I would recommend you to get the latest firmware also, so you don't have any playing problems with the latest Blu-Ray movies.

Thx for the info; that's what I thought, but wasn't 100% sure. Seeing as this is supposedly the last major firmware upgrade for this year, looks like it's inevitable.

I haven't had any troubles with 3.01

Signing in is a breeze.

There is a rumor that October has a firmware upgrade coming with cross game chat (Fairly major upgrade)...but there is always a reason to delay right
