Exclamation PlayStation Network in 2009!

So let's do a recap first!

2006: Launch year, PSN was pretty bare, functional, but bare. Free though!

2007: Home announced games started to come but the weekly content updates were pretty bad, especially poor in SCEE regions.

2008: In-game XMB was added with firmware 2.40 along with trophies, in-game messaging and custom soundtracks where supported. PSN content really started to ramp up and we got some excellent DLC for a number of games and some very good first party downloadable games like WipEout HD and GT5: Prologue. By the end of the year the platform had grown into a wonderfully varied resource for gamers, with games like PixelJunk Eden and the esoteric Echochrome fulfilling the arty needs and more mainstream games such as SSFIITHDR and Ratchet and Clank Future: Quest for Booty giving the majority of gamers their thrills.

Looking ahead to 2009: Well what do we want to see? More integration within the PSN? Cross-game chat/invites are surely on the way, Sony wouldn't ignore us for this long... . It looks like another stellar year for gaming content with the likes of Fat Princess and Flower set to arrive early in the year, hopefully starting a trend for quality content in 2009!

There's already some pretty cool stuff this year, like Cuboid, GTI Club+, and Magic Ball.

Oh, and feel free to pave over my post if you need space.

Should be OK!

I'll add games to the OP when I get time, rest assured those three will be included.

What I do want is PS2 BC so I can buy a new PS3 when the 45nm RSX and Cell comes out, my PS3 right now is too loud and gets hot after a couple of hours of play, and I'm sure I could sell it because it has partial HW BC on it.

I also wanna see background downloading while watching blu ray movies, in game XMB while playing PS2/PS1 games, x-game invites and chat, PS2 games selling on the PS Store, DRM free music store, less ridiculous DRM on the Video Store, being able to play my PSP games on my big TV through the PS3, I'm sure I'm forgetting a couple of things.

Also on the games front, more PS1 games please, and Fat Princess is looking like a must have for me, more demos too, I would've bought echochrome when it was $5 dollars if it had a demo, but since it didn't have it, I didn't buy it but then I played it on PS Home and really enjoyed it...:/

Most of what your asking has nothing to do with PSN but more with the PS3's firmware.

Most of what you asked has to do with the FW also....either way whenever I talk about my most wanted PSN features, I will without a doubt ask for some features that will require FW upgrades, I guess they go hand in hand most of the time.

I think that they should make SCEA and SCEE more unified towards each other when it comes towards PS Store releases. Not just that but also voice messaging just like out of XBL where you send messages of...well y'know. I also like to see even more retro releases on the service, like Duke Nukem 3D or even PSone games with online multiplayer. I really wanna see something like Ridge Racer Type 4 with online play. Plus I want more PS3 games with a PC counterpart use mods like they did with UTIII. That is what I want this year.

bigger friend lists, i dont have this problem but there are a few people i want to add but their friend list r full. aslo u should be able to group your friends into subgroups to navigate to people u talk to more and save time. also under your name where it shows what game u r playing it should show your trophy level and your precent to the next level. these r just some smaller features that i want that people dont usually talk about.

Wasn't Sony making noise about world-wide certification on at least PSN titles? Some publishers are still having trouble with Europe from what it sounds like, like Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle Cars was confirmed for the 22nd twice by SCEE, and suddenly didn't show up (from what I hear).

Oh well, stuff I'd like to see:

More PS1 and PS2 titles. Would be nice if they worked out something with Sega for Saturn and Dreamcast titles too, I think I can safely say there's enough Genesis compilations now.

In-game voice chat... with the PSP (not in-game) too, something like Skype. It's great that the PSP has Skype, but it's completely nuts that it won't work on older models. If Sony could do a proper, efficient implementation of Skype's client and allow it in-game on the PS3, that'd be awesome.

Make the DRM on the video store at least work like the games side (I'd settle for being able to redownload them, sharing's not as important). I'm sure it's a contract issue with the movie studios... SPE could lead the way.

Music store: Now that iTunes is dropping DRM on music, Sony might as well not bother unless they forgo DRM too.

That's going to be difficult to do. Aside from SCE's different regions having different standards and standard checking procedures, each region also has its own versions of things like ESRB (or CERO or PEGI, etc.), and for many third party publishers, each region also has its own branch. That's a lot of people who have to work together to get stuff done.

I'm sure it is tough, but I do recall Sony announcing they were working on it last fall. Pretty sure MS does it already.

I remember Sony saying that, probably another one of their failed promises.

I'd like to possibility of entering someone else's game if they are online.....even if it's just to watch and see how they do something...

or if two others are playing a game head-to-head...someone can watch the game...
