Default Picture Quality...

First of all, thanks for all the wonderful and helpful feedback guys. I feel really welcomed by the blu community. I love it here. Go here everyday now.

I've gotten a blu player, the LG BD 370 which fits nicely with my 42 inch plasma tv. I was blown away by the great picture quality. When i popped my Casino Royale, even the Sony logo and Rating disclaimer looked so much brighter and clearer. I knew it was gonna be good. And it was. Seeing Bond on Hidef was amazing. I loved it. Saw the film again like never before. Every second there was something i'd "ooh-ed and ahh-ed" about. Fantastic...

Heck, the Hancock trailer looked so beautiful and clear. A little better than Casino i think.

I do have questions though. When i saw 300, i noticed there were tons of grains which i thought was quite normal for the film. But then i saw the special features, and in between segments they had clips of the films and they sorta looked better than the film? The picture was so much better. Are my eyes playing tricks on me? The same with the 'Coming to Sony' trailers. How come the Casino clip looked better (albeit full screen).

Do all trailers or previews look better than the actual film itself?

Not that i'm complaining, i love my BD movies.. As you can see I only have a few at the moment...

Thanks again guys! Very appreciated

Welcome to the forum. 300 is the way it is because that was the artistic direction they were taking. You will see many people moan about the grain but that is just the style that the director wanted. I never watched the special features so I can't answer the second part. As for trailers, remember trailers are there to get you interested in a particular title, they want to grab your attention. Plus most of these trailers are put together before the final movie encode has been completely processed so that may have something to do with it. Also I never have checked the video bitrate for a trailer, so who knows they may be encoded at a higher bitrate which would help the PQ as well.

There are other little things that could make a difference but for the most part this is not an everytime occurance. Plus it may be a placebo effect if you watched the trailers before your first Blu-ray movie and the WOW factor was so high, and then by the time you got accustomed to the quality that Blu-ray has to offer, and by the time the movie progressed you just thought is was of lesser quality. I could be way off on that but just a thought...

Enjoy your time here and glad to have you.

Usually the Blu-ray trailers have a higher bitrate then the actual movie so sometimes like in the case of Blade Runner you actually see a little bit more detail in the trailer then the final release. And I am pretty sure the special features in 300 are in 480i which explain why you didn't see any grain in that. Also Blu-ray is not about making everything "crystal clear" so if you grab your Casino Royale Blu-ray case and flip it over note how it says "true to the original source master" which is exactly what Blu-ray is about. Replicating the source material as closely as possible, so the grain in 300 is fine.
