dark picture quality - Blu-ray Forum

This is my first thread and I hope this is the correct place for it. I have searched the web and nothing I have found so far could help me, so maybe this forum can.

I recently bought a PS3 for my living room to use as sort of a media center for the house. I replaced my old 'upconverting' DVD player. Now when I watch most movies I have tons of darkness in 'dark' movies (opening scene in Assassination of Jesse James, all of Battlestar Galactica season 3 so far) when it wasn't as pronounced before. Its almost unwatchable.

I have a Toshiba 42 inch DLP and the PS3 is connected with an HDMI cable. It happens on Blu-ray and regular DVD's but no matter what, the slight shadows I should notice on faces are simply a large dark spot on the tv, not the way it should be.

I just typed this up on the fly before heading home. If anyone could help but needs more info, let me know and I can get you whatever info you would need to make a suggestion to me.

Did you adjust your picture settings when connecting your PS3 to your TV? Each source device (blu-ray player, satellite, cable, etc.) will vary with it's picture output. That is why your TV should be adjusted to display the best picture possible for each source device you use.

If that doesn't work come back for additional help.

Do you have RGB on full? It tends to bring out colors more, including black.

goodatmath adjust Brightness/Black Level on your display and see if that fixes it.

Having PS3 if Full (Computer levels) makes shadows darker, so if the PS3 currently set to it, selecting Limited (video levels) will make shadows lighter.

Interesting point, I actually noticed greater black levels too... I thought it was more like the original movies so have not made any adjustments. I did try adjusting the black levels on my monitor to see if the detail is there and I found I was getting all the detail - perhaps your monitor is not set to default? It may be stating the obvious but I always start with everything at default and go from there, with everything digital it "should" look best at that setting and then you go for personal preference. You might want to reset your monitor to factory settings and go from there... Hope this is of some use to you...
