Smile I'm New & Need Help! :(

Hi Guys!

First of all I'm a newcomer to the bluray world and blu-ray.com site , which I think is amazing and you guys make it better while me reading all the great info.

Anyways I just got a PS3 Slim and next week planning to buy a home theater at a local store which I saw and is the HT-S5200 Onkyo for $494.. I have a small living room so for me I don't need much , I want this more for the movies and gaming!

My question is can I get the Dolby true hd in this receiver? or does the receiver has to be Dolby true hd as the PS3 ?

here is the link of the one I'm interested:

http://www.onkyousa.com/model.cfm?m=...ss=Systems&p=i

Thanks a lot in advance and any recommendations would be helpful due to I want to make a good investment.

You can't get Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD MA with that receiver. You would need to upgrade to the next model or possibly look into buying the whole setup seperately.

No matter what, make sure your receiver is able to decode DTS HDMA and Dolby Digital HD. The lossless (Very Dynamic, Uncompressed) sound quality, bass, mid and high end detail of these codecs are so worth it. If you don't get it, I know that you will be soon to get rid of any receiver that does not process these, and will only end up up-grading to a receiver that does anyway. Do it right the first time and enjoy! It isn't just the PQ that blows people away with blu-ray!

Welcome!

AVR decoding is not necessary with a PS3. The PS3 will do the decoding and output multichannel PCM. As long as the receiver can process audio over HDMI, the OP can get lossless with his player.

In the meantime, read A Guide to Home Theater Audio Codecs and A Guide to Bass Management.

In my opinion, HD audio decoding is less important than HDMI switching (aka repeating). With a non-HDMI switching setup, like the HT-S5200, you have to run the video via HDMI and the audio via optical cable. Get a receiver that switches and you send both audio and video via HDMI.

Re HD audio: I don't have the best setup, but in A/B testing I've noticed very little between HD audio and core lossy audio. Obviously, this is a subjective experience so YMMV. Also, the better the speaker the more you should notice. The point is a bit moot though since these days pretty much any receiver that's an HDMI switcher will also decode HD audio.

Either you will need to pony up for the HT-S6200 or buy a receiver and speaker set. The TX-SR507 and HT-RC160 are HDMI switchers. Buy one of those (or a Denon, Yamaha, Pioneer, etc.) and then either a 5.1 speaker set or speakers individually.

Totally agree on the monoprice. I have the onkyo 705 nd it's fantastic. you could grab you some polk monitor's for 200, a good center for <100 and a decent pair of surrounds for <75 most likely. Check New Egg often for deals, and any time you need help ask away
