When I'm watching content in the 4:3 format...is there a way to change the side bars from gray to black?

they are grey to prevent image retention, as far as i know on the panasonics it is not adjustable

It is adjustable. Just go into the setup menu.

I stumbled upon it in the menu once before but now when I need it, I can't find it, haha.

I'm with a new cable company that automatically stretches 4:3 content to 16:9 and it looks ridiculous.
