Hi everyone, this is my first post so I am not sure if this would be the correct forum for my question.
After 3 years of owning a HD tv, I have decided to get myself a blu-ray player but I'm not sure which one to go for (or if certain players would suit my tv more than others). I have a Samsung PS-42S5H which only displays at 720p and I am thinking about getting a Sony BDPS360B blu-ray player. However, I have heard that there are some issues regarding playback with this player on lower spec tvs (framerate etc) and I was wondering if this is true or false. Maybe someone could tell me if they have had any problems as well or if there is a more suitable player for my tv. Another question is regarding sound from the player. I will be connecting the blu-ray player via optical to my sony dav-dz660 home cinema unit. I know that true hd sound won't work via optical but would there still be an improvement in sound quailty over dvd (even if it is a small amount)? Advice would be appreciated, thanks. |

welcome to the forums man this is the best place for advice i don't buy anything without checkin here first. I don't know much about your system but do know that blu ray is amazing but i also see it in 1080p. All i can really tell you is that i have a samsung bd1600 and love it man it also have pandora and netflix blockbust(not a member so i don't use it) and youtube so i got netflix and it is definetly one of the coolest things about my system. It is not that expensive and if you have the net is is well worth the money plus for only 11.65 a month you get blu ray videos sent to your house and all the streaming you want for free and its all in high def. if i were you i would get it. I am also in the martket for a surround sound system now and everyone is tellin me make sure i get the hdmi so i can get the hd. I am sure if you hook it up to your surround sytem it will still sound greta but obviously if you can upgrade then do it. Thats all i got hope it halped i posted the link for amazon and my bd player. Def. something to think about and it constantly gets free firmware upgrades it is a great system. http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-BD-P16...5139330&sr=8-1 that is the amazon and this is what cnet says http://reviews.cnet.com/blu-ray-play...?tag=mncol;lst i just read the reviews that people that owned it had on cnet and they said it wasnt that great. Screw that this player changed my life and is sooooo worth the 200.00$ i highly recomend it

Back to the question posted by the OP...
Yes, you should expect to experience an upgrade in your audio even if it is lossy. The Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS core 5.1 tracks run at higher bit rates than DVD. As such, even though they aren't quite as good as lossless, they are a significant upgrade over DVD. As for Samsung v Pioneer: I can't offer an opinion as I don't know much about either apart from what I've read here. I'm sticking with my trusty PS3. ![]() |

As for the player itself, Sony makes a good product. They are fairly quick in releasing firmware updates, and provide decent support as well. There are many people here who own a Sony player, myself being one, and are very happy with them. The 360 will no doubt provide you many hours of movie-watching enjoyment I'm sure. As for the audio, progers13 is bang on. Even on the "lossy" sound output on Blu-rays, the sound is an improvement over DVD's. Simply because of the higher bit-rate of the audio sampling. |

I may it a rule to never buy a Samsung anything, but in particular you should never purchase one of their Blu-Ray machines. Absolute headaches is what they are. |

I also choose not to get into a debate about brands. You're going to get people who have had a bad experience with Brand X, and will steer you away from it. That's the wrong logic for you to consider as for every "bad experience" their are plenty more "good experiences" with the same player.
Just make sure that from whomever you are buying it that they are reputeable, so you can get it fixed or replaced in case that's needed. If you like the Samsung 1600, go for it. John |
