Default Southland Canceled

NBC has canceled Southland, even though it's second season hasn't started yet. The ratings of the show fell greatly over the course of the first season and NBC didn't think the show was a good fit at an earlier hour. It's not known if NBC will air the 6 completed episodes of season 2, and the show may be shopped around to a cable network.

Just more proof that NBC sucks. They cancelled My Name is Earl and now, Southland. This blows.

NBC has nothing that I wish to watch anymore. It's either ABC/FOX or cable for me. Mostly cable. AMC/HBO and others produce TV that is better than anything network can hope to have.

Yeah I do but don't really catch it when it airs. I have better luck with The Office on TBS lol. I was really into 30 Rock the first two seasons then kind of stopped following it. My favorite episode is the poker one. Kenneth was brilliant in that one.

I watched the first two episodes before I gave up and knew that this show was headed for failure. It was a wannabe Shield without good writting. The characters were lame and it was to over done. I'm glad they pulled the plug. Go to FX if you want really good drama. Rescue Me, Sons of Anarchy (so-so) and many others.

This show was too dark and gritty? I guess Law & Order SVU is next? A recent episode started out with a dead girl stuffed in a suitcase and ended with a guy getting stabbed to death (with scissors) by his daughter in the police station..blood everywhere...great episode lol

stupid Jay Leno

the first show to feel the wrath of the Jay Leno effect.

it was deemed to dark for the 9pm spot and all the 10pm slots are reserved for his majesty.

how many people must suffer before they realize this Leno thing was a bad idea.

I was reading an article about this show and it said NBC pulled it because it was too violent for the time slot. Why they wouldnt just move it to a new timeslot baffles me. Thats the corporate suits for ya.

Yeah, but that show gets 10 million viewers so it's okay. Southland wouldn't be too gritty if it had not plummeted in the ratings every episode.

True. I guess new dramas don't have a chance with Jay Leno around.

So did Seinfeld in its first season.

Terrible news; this was the best cop drama on tv last year by far, and right up there with best drama, period.

Comparing this show to any of the Law & Order SVU - NCIS - The Badge nonsense is like standing Raging Bull next to Rocky V. No comparison at all.

The bottom line as to why a show gets cancelled is generally this:

No audience. The ratings are too low for corporate sponsors to spend money on airtime or the audience demographic is not appealing to corporate sponsors to spend money on airtime.

or

Ratings may be decent, but corporate sponsors pulled their ads/air times or simply do not want their product promoted with a particular show.

So basically it all comes down to money. A network just isn't going to support a show that can not recoup costs, no matter how good a show may be to fans.

Yep, and Seinfeld would never have seen a second season in today's TV landscape. I'm not saying the show deserved to be canceled, I never watched it, but if the ratings had stayed strong NBC would have found a spot for it.

I'm curious what NBC's feeling on Leno's show are. The show has plummeted in the ratings and is getting less than 5 million viewers a night. However, the show's dirt cheap compared to producing 5 hours of primetime programming with no guarantee of success. I've also heard that established producers are staying away from NBC because there's a higher likelihood that a new show would be canceled.

TNT is going to air the season 2 episodes that have already been filmed, as well as the season 1 episodes, but has not ordered any additional episodes. The episodes will begin airing Thursday, January 12 at 10/9 central.
