Default 2 Channel Listening Help For Denon 4308 - How to set up

Hey Guys -

I am getting confused on how to set up my Denon 4308 A/V receiver for 2 channel listening. I have Dali ikon 7's for front, dali ikon 2's for rears, dali ikon vokal two for center, and a Martin Logan Descent i subwoofer.

I have the receiver set up for blu rays and movie playback like this: In the speaker configuration set the speakers to small, sub mode to LFE + Main and the Crossover to 80 Hz maybe I should set my crossover for my fronts here to 40 hz since my front can handle down to 36hz regarding to the (-/+ db thing).

But im not sure about with cd playing with stereo/2 channel listening? I shouldnt have this set to LFE, right? So how do I do this then?

Thanks Guys so very much

is this correct:

For 2 channel I need to setup in the receiver: non LFE + main...

Basically for movies I need LFE connection, and for cds and 2 channel/stereo playback no LFE connection, right? if I use my martin logan descent i subwoofer what do I set my receivers crossover to, and what do I set my receivers crossover for without my subwoofer? 40hz since dali ikon 7's can go to 36 hz according to the (- + db) specification

Thanks guys

It's really gonna be up to personal preference, but Pure Direct Mode should offer the best sound quality for two channel listening !!!

What is your source player ??? Are you using the analog outputs from your source ??? Depending on what you are using, I would configure your receiver (if possible) and assign the proper settings according to source.

Also, as far as using a sub for two channel. Again up to you !!! What is the frequency response of your model of speakers. I personally don't like subs while listening to music. Well, with the exception of REL subs so far and subwoofer location is a limiting factor for me........

Thanks for the reply

My source player is a Denon 3800. I had figured out I should just use LPCM output via HDMI, since analog outs have their issues on their own as well as not being able to use the receiver equilizer and other audyssey options as well.

My frequency of my dali 7's are (- + db) 36Hz - 30,000khz

If you have a good subwoofer, set your front speakers to SMALL with a crossover of 60Hz and subwoofer to LFE for movies. All other surround and center speakers should also be set to SMALL with a crossover of 80Hz.

For two channel music, you will have three options:
  1. In the two-channel setup of the receiver, set the front speakers to LARGE, subwoofer to NO, and receiver to STEREO. You will get two channel music.
  2. Set the front speakers to SMALL, the crossover to 60Hz, and subwoofer to LFE. Set your receiver to STEREO and you will get 2.1 sound from your system. The frequencies above 60Hz will go to your front speakers and frequencies below 60Hz will go to the subwoofer.
  3. Set your front speakers to LARGE, subwoofer to LFE+Main, and the crossover to 80Hz. You will get 2.1 sound from your system. However, frequencies below 80Hz will go to the subwoofer and the front speakers at the same time. The bass may be a bit loud and bloated. You may have to turn the subwoofer gain in the receiver down.

Try the analog outs on the 3800, you "might" like what you hear & you might not !!! Personally I run away from EQ's & any DSP as far as music is concerned. But it's all about personal preference and it should be Depending on what music you listen to most you can get away without using a sub and just set your front L/R channels to full-range for two channel duty !!! Subs can be hard to get to sound natural for the sake of music, but if you don't have any restrictions as far as placement or room issues subs can sound musical. All in all, experimentation, trial & error is what is gonna help you out most. Never know what your gonna like until you try it

I have the little sister to your 4308, the 3808.

I also have speakers that can handle down to the 30Hz's (B&W 804's). I have mine setup up in the following two ways.

For HT, I have the x-over set to 60Hz and LFE set to 90Hz.

For 2-Channel Stereo, I have the x-over set to 40Hz and LFE set to 90Hz.

For Direct and Pure Direct, the Denon will not engage the subwoofer. I have not been able to find a right sound for 2-channel without the sub. Maybe it is just me and hearing two channel with the sub ruined me.

Thanks guy so very much

Do you think Im setting up my blu ray sound setup correct. I should just let my sub do all the bass extension, right?

So in other words...receiver should be set to: speakers to small, sub to LFE, and crossover to 80hz, right?

Thanks guys

I would play around with the settings and see what sound best to you. Your speakers can handle more of the low end, so you may want to see how low sounds good to you.
