Default sound not that great...

hey guys...first here is my set up
https://www.blu-ray.com/community/ga...ember=namtab69

Its decent equipment, but my room is odd, with odd sound stage...based on my setup (as seen in the pics) can u guys suggest a better sub position?!? the way it is right now its against a 13 ft wall, and a balcony (so glass) on the right of the sub... I know the energys are great speakers, and i have them bi-wired with my adcom amp...but i am not getting the sound quality they provide . any suggestions?!?! (new condo...lol)

thanks

You have very nice equipment. If you are not getting satisfactory sound, it is the fault of the room and the placement of the speakers.

Your subwoofer is not in a good location. It is too close to your speaker and the glass door. Move it to the other side of the room and definitely experiment with it location. It may be a good idea to put it on a riser.

Also, it appears that your tower surround speakers are in front of the listening area. Move them behind the sofa and make them face the front speakers. You don't want them to pound sound into your head.

If your room is too lively and active, you may want to look into room treatment. Some acoustic foam, corner traps, and diffusers may help.

Make sure you run the calibration program. It may also help to get the $50 Radio Shack digital SPL meter and check the levels of your speakers manually.

I agree with BigDaddy. You have great gear. As for the sub, try placing it next to your seating position on the opposite of your front soundstage. That is how I have my sub set up and I think it sounds GREAT!

can you show more pics of other corners of the room? Hard to tell, but what is going on in the right side of the room, farthest away from the patio door? Is that a possible location for the sub? How much experimenting have you done with the sub?

Really, Big Daddy hit it on the head with what he already advised. Subwoofer riser and your surround field placement needs quick adjusting. Also, your overall AVR settings might need a tweak to get you better bass.

edit: I kind of see in one of your pics that your right side front sound stage may not be a good spot for the sub either. BD and some others have recently helped me discover I was seated in a null spot of bass in my new place too, and with some furniture replacement, I have rediscovered what bass is supposed to sound like. Funny how a few feet can make a difference.

thanks for the tips guys...i will post more pics...i did move the sub to the inside of the right speaker, but still not satisfied...i did not try to put it by the left speaker though...i might pick up another psw505...maybe i'll pick up a better sub...as for the surrounds i cant really do much cause of the odd room specs

the last thing i will try is to raise the sub...i have never tried that yet...

Keep experimenting with placement of the sub. There's a very good guide that Big Daddy put together on sub placement. You should look it up and give it a try.

Also, move your front towers at least 10 inches further out from the walls, and toe them in a little bit toward center. That may help with your mid-range definition and improve the detail in your soundstage. Just don't over do it, or your soundstage will collapse.

I'm not really sure what you can do with your rear surrounds though. Can you post some shots of your room, from the front standing in front of the screen looking back toward the seats and surrounds? It's hard to get a feel for the room layout from the shots posted.

You have some great gear, and I hope you can get it up to your expectations.

Try also adding a large curtain rod with 4 or 5 panels of heavy curtains to that door/window area.... The plastic-blind-things and glass are probably causing you to have a very "Cave-like" echoing room.

Put the sub in the middle of the room and walk around until it sounds good to you. Then put the sub close to where you were when it sounded good.

I had my sub in the front right corner against the wall. Sounded really boomy so I ended up moving it over about 2 feet and it sounds great.
Funny how a small adjustment makes such a big difference.

What is your sub crossed-over at? That glass wall is a hinderance - curtians? Your Energy speakers are great! can you move them away from the back wall just a little bit (experiment). It's not your gear - its your room. I also see that we have a situation where your mains actually out class your subwoofer. Your sub is rated at 23hz (pretty good mind you but how much usefulness and what type of accuracy - Your 2.4's are rated at 30hz but have useable output down to 25hz). As an experiment only - run your Veritas at full range (sending the bass signal to the front) and no subwoofer (don't do this for long - I just want to see what type of bass performance you would get from the Veritas). If your bass perfomance gets better - it may be that the Polk sub is not suitable match for the Veritas It's just a suggestion and an experiment mind you

I think your room is just too small to take advantage of that equipment. It looks like anywhere you sit youve got a speaker like 2 feet away.

I've got big ol' front speakers too, I like to have a large front sound stage. My Left and Rights are about 13 feet apart, sounds amazing. I've got the sub between the left speaker and tv, but lots of room for it to breathe.

i think you might have hit the spot...when i run the 2.4i's at full range (large setting on amp) without the sub...they still sound amazing....i thought the sub was still hooked up ...so i think i need a better sub, or maybe another 505... i did move the speakers a bit more (forward) and they sound much better, but cause of the size of the room, they are almost near the couch... but thatns to everyones help here i think i have narrowed down the problem...

so the solution...1 better sub, or 2 505's or finally a new condo - i think i will leave the third one out for now...
