Default TV popping sound...

I have a 55" Rear Projection Sony Bravia and it just made a really loud popping sound it and the screen went blank. The TV still turns on but it makes a really bad grinding sound when it does. Is the problem fixable?

All problems are fixable...it's the cost that can be scary.

No telling what blew. If it was the bulb, not a big deal, but that doesn't explain the grinding sound.

There is a cooling fan for the bulb - not all that expensive, but I never heard of one "popping".

Does the TV light up, can you see the picture?

Well, the TV powers up but there is no picture and the TV light is green and just blinks along with that grinding sound... We're gonna get an estimate sometime next week and then we'll decide if its worth it. If it's too pricey, then we're just going to buy another one...

Bulbs are over $200, that was probably the popping sound...the video block isn't cheap, but the fan is...hope it doesn't break the bank. Getting an equivalent TV is going to be fairly expensive.

Are you referencing the bulb for a DLP? The guy doesn't list a make/model but I'm also assuming that this is the type of TV. If so, a bulb does not cost $200, if you care to shop around. I got one from Ebay for ~$80 and it was a super simple remove/replace operation.

The Sony he has is the 55" LCD rear projection. I got one for my mom, and it's very nice (1080i, but looks awesome).

The Sony bulbs aren't cheap, she just got one and it was about $220. It is much brighter than DLP bulbs, runs pretty hot...completely different animal than the DLP stuff that Mitsubishi and Samsung have.

It's worth keeping, in my opinion. But they're not cheap to feed.

My old 36" crt just started popping, clicking, and turning itself on and off again. It's getting annoying. I hope it's fried so I can get a new one.

Yeah, it was a Sony bulb. I looked for it online and they had it for $199.99 plus shipping. A little pricey, but the tv works just like new!
