Default Walmart vs. Amazon Price War on books

I tried to find a topic on this but so many walmart and amazon threads out there.

For those that read and are Stephen King, Dean Koontz, and Michael Crichton fans. Walmart and Amazon are in a price war on their top 10 pre-order books and this relates to Kindle books on Amazon too....if it's available for kindle.

They started at $10 per book then Amazon went to $9 and now Walmart is at $8.99 and free shipping per book. There are other books besides those three authors but they are a few of my favorites.

I don't usually order from Walmart but if you order the Stephen King, Dean Koontz, and Michael Crichton books all at the same time to get the free shipping from Amazon, they won't ship the Stephen King book (11/10 release) until the other two books get released on 11/14.

I ordered from Walmart.

Yeah, anytime there is a price war it's good for the consumer. I'm trying to find a new book to read and might get one that's cheaper. I like to read before I go to bed but I can't find any books I like, might just go with some of King's older books. My attention span with books can be bad though so I struggle with 1000 page books.

They were talking about this on NPR this morning coming to work. $9.00!!! That's insane for a first print hardcover. I wonder what cost is for these.

I saw last night that Target has entered the price war and Walmart is offically at $8.99...a whole penny cheaper than Amazon.

Price wars are cool, but Wal-Mart can be scary. If Wal-Mart had their way, anyone who produced anything would be making Chinese wages, just so they could sell things very cheaply.

Since I imagine the authors probably don't get a huge cut of the cover price anyway, I hope this doesn't hurt them much, if at all. If the price cut comes largely from store markup, then that's great. If it comes from publisher's profit, that's fine too.

Although I think I read that they're mainly doing this on major releases, so I'm sure those authors (the Stephen Kings, James Pattersons, et als of the world) are already living comfortable lives.

They are doing it on the Top Ten Pre-orders, scary is Sarah Palins book is #1. "Most" of the authors are already pretty well off already.

I just read a story that if these kind of price wars keep going over the next couple of years it could put Borders and Barnes and Nobles out of business.

No great loss there. Not a fan of Walmart, but the prices that Borders and Barnes and Noble charge is insane when you compare it with other retailers. Same could be said of Best Buy.

People who buy books from B&N and Borders are I usually grab the isbn and get it off Amazon for a fraction of what Borders wants. I don't know how they are still in businees. Same goes for how much they sell movies for. Ridiculous.
