A rather sad but not surprising survey by Best Buy.

it's poor marketing from the hardware and software manufacturers combined with the general lack of experience and knowledge on the part of the employees of big-box-mart stores like best buy, cc, walmart, etc, combined with the plethora of options to connect devices (HDMI, DVI, component, SVIDEO, etc....) with the added confusion of "HD-Upconvert" marketing on standard def DVD players.

then there is this format war which only confuses people even more who say to themselves that dvd is good enough.

Yup, my brother just bought an 56" HDTV. It's way to big for his living room for one, and he doesn't have a clue about HDMI, DVI, upconverting DVD players, etc. so I'm trying to educate him as best I can.

I'm also trying to convince him to get a PS3.

I still get a kick out of taking this laptop and HDMI cord over to friends' house(s) and letting fly with a Blu-ray Disc or two.

The looks on their faces... Priceless!

If the format war isn't ended soon and a single focus on public promotion instituted, HD software will die. The tremendous advances in display has become so complicated for the average person, they will give up.

The lack of a single standard may end up killing everything.

This isn't surprising anyone. What worries me more is Best Buy's so-called campaign to educate people - BB employees aren't exactly a fountain of correct information about hi-def to begin with from what I gather . I think they need to educate their employees first, before they try to educate their customers.

I volunteer to stand by the HDM section of my local BB and inform inquiring customers of what it's all about... I'll also choke out, armbar, and submit the shit out anyone who even dares to pick up an HD-DUD.

I have an easier solution. Best Buy don't have to educate anyone. All they have to do is discontinue HD-DVD hardware and software. That should help clear matters up a bit.

Sadly, agreed.
