Default Panny G15 just purchased, Now what?

My Parents just went out and got a 46" Panny G15, Plasma, and I was wondering is there any "special" settings they should be doing for the 1st 100hours of usage. I just got myself a Pioneer Kuro 5020 back in February, and I went thru the whole "break-in" period. With the Slide show colour display wheel from the USB stick, that I found at AVSForums.com, Really don't want my parents to go thru all that here. I just warned them to only watch HD programing for the first 100 hours, and make sure everything is stretched to the limits.

Any other info greatly appreciated. Is the "Break-in" stuff really overated? I Can see not watching Standard Def, so you don't have the "burn-in" side walls etc......

For example should I bump up the brightness, contrast, gama, etc.....for the first 100 hours? any settings greatly appreciated.

Really could use some info here, looks like a solid TV, Not Kuro quality but close.... LOL!!!

Thanks again, this forum/site rocks.

I would say generally watch full screen material, and avoid the really bright picture settings. I have mine on THX (unless there's noise at the far ends). I really don't think it's much of an issue. I've done some gaming, and watched several movies...never noticed even a hint of IR.

Everything I've read indicates that you would almost have to try to cause a problem in order to have an issue.

I just used the set personally and haven't had any issues. I would agree in using the THX if you're not going to eiter calibrate it for them or get it professionally calibrated.

i would not say it is overated. I had no hesitation taking 100 hours to protect my tv but then that is my personal preference. afterall 100 hours out of the thousands i will be using it for is nothing!

what the break in will do is give the phosphors and even burn for the 1st hundred hours, thus reducing the risk of IR. the 3 best thing you can do are

Put all picture settings in the menu's to 50 or below

Put the tv on zoom, especially for SD content where side bars may be present

Do not use vivid, custom modes. stick to cinema then after break in play around with settings

Hope your rents enjoy the tv

thanks guys.......

Standard cable watching is a must @ Zoom feature. I agree. Speaking of which how come the G15 doesnt have an auto stretch feature like my Kuro? unless its there I cant seem to find it. On my Kuro, I got an auto-stretch feature that stretches the picture to the max, when in 4:3 picture like standard cable television. I used that often during my break-in time, and still do to this day.

I can't remember if I have auto stretch set up on the TV or the cable box. I'll try and check tonight, but I only watch standard TV full screen, I've just gotten used to it at this point....and, I don't watch all that much non-HD stuff.

Thanks, please have a look. I know that Rogers has that feature, (auto stretch) I turned it off, and relied on my Kuro to do the work. Unfortanently the Panny G15 (parents) doesn't seem to have that feature. Or I can't find it. I really only want it to work for Standard Def, stations. Like you say. I hardly watch standard def, and I tell them to follow suit.

If you are not familiar with calibration, I would suggest you get a professional to do it, its really worth it.

I'm fairly certain that the cable box is doing the stretching...Time Warner, not sure of the model of the box, HD/DVR though. If I click all the available formats, 480, 720, 1080i, 1080p, it automatically makes the change and re-adjusts based on HD/standard signal.
Perhaps the g15 does not have this option?
