Default Went Speaker Shopping

I finally decided to go speaker shopping to get an idea of what I may want. Reading different reviews I wasn’t sure what I wanted, because you should listen for yourself to get what you really like.

I made three stops and each place had a particular brand to sell. First stop I listen to Monitor Audio and I wanted to hear the RS series. They had the RS and the RX series in and I was able to hear both. I was kinda thinking it may not be that much of a difference between them and hopefully I could get the RS set at a nice price, but NOOOO!!!!

The RS8 sounded really nice, but then he switched to the RX and it was NIGHT and DAY and truly unbelievable sounding from the RX compared to the RS. I knew at that point I wanted the RX and nothing else, I didn’t care about saving the difference from getting an older RS.

We talked about two different packages:

(2) RX-2’s
(2) RX-FX pair, for 7.0
(1) RX-Center

Or

(2) RX-8
(2) RX-FX pair, for 7.0
(1) RX-Center

Price difference between the two were $860.00

I am more into movies and I was really thinking about the first set.

I was asked to come back today around 6 to talk with some rep’s from Monitor Audio, they flew in to train the people on the new GX series.

Went to another place and they had PSB T-65, I was told that model is being discontinued and I could get a fantastic price from the demo they had. The demo’s were much more then the new RX series, so that is out the door.

I stop at a third place just to see what they had, I was pretty much sold on the RX, but wanted to give something else a listen.

I listen to the B&W

(2) 683 fronts
(2) 686 for the rears to make a 7.0
(1) HTM61 center

I liked them a lot and sounded fantastic. I asked the salesman how much just to get a silly idea of what it would cost more then the RX series. To my surprise The B&W’s were only $3.71 more(that’s not a typo).

I’m going to do some research to see if I can find the RX cheaper, if not I will be getting the B&W’s

I love going speaker auditioning! In fact, I'm going either on Wednesday or Thursday to audition a pair of Totem Wind speakers. At a starting price of $8,995 a pair, up to $13,000, they aren't a consideration, but I want to hear them nonetheless.

What was the price those guys gave you on the MA's and B&W's?

John

I didnt notice a big difference between the RS6 and RX6 honestly. I loved the sound of the RS8 but the rep said with the room size I have, it would be overkill. He suggested that the minimum room size to get the 8's full potential was 12 x 14 mine is 9 x 10. I really wanted the RS8's. Who knows, I might find a used pair one day.

Good luck on the Searching guys!

That is unbelievable I swear, it was night and day for me. I'm on my way back now to see the guys and get a better demo. They used a Denon receiver without an amp.

Hamp, looks like losing your stuff actually had a silver lining after all, as its looking like you're going to assemble a better system after all!

Good luck on the speaker hunt/shopping John and Hamp!

It looks like I'm going to get the first package. I didn't get the tower's because I am about 90% movie watcher and only about 10% music. I really listen to music in my truck on my way somewhere.

(2) RX-2’s --- These babies are huge with an 8inch woofer
(2) RX-FX pair, for 7.0 --- They tried to talk me into just 2 instead of 4
(1) RX-Center --- I'm kinda bothered that this is only a 6inch instead of an 8inch like the left & right

****EDIT****
Hey rded, its funny that you mentioned Silver, because that is the speaker line for the Monitor's I'm gonna get.

Why not the RX-6's? I know it is a 6 inch woofer, but it seriously packs some punch.

I don't think the cost is that much between the 6s and 2s.

You might wanna look into Ultimate Support also... I use these for my studio monitors (KRK RP8's). These are really well made, solid and stable. Plus you can pass your cables through the back... check them out if you can.

I think it was how I was talking and comparing things that the subject of RX6 didn't come up.

Instead of giving a long story it went kinda like:

1. I went in to buy the RS6 or 8
2. Was told that they have the RX's in
3. I was thinking I could get a good deal on the RS since the RX was in
4. Did a listen to the RS6 first and then the RX6 and was AMAZED
5. Did the same thing with the RS8 and RX8 and just astounded with the difference
6. In my mind there was no way I was going to get the RS, because I loved the RX8.
7. Was told to come back in a couple hours if I wanted to talk with some Monitor reps.
8. Went to another store and listen to some B&W (683, 686 and HTM61) I liked them and they were only $3.71 more
9. Came home started this thread and was kinda looking for some thoughts
10. went back and told the price of the B&W and they really went into the sales things
11. Talked about movie Vs. music and since I was more movie, I was sold on the RX2's
12. When I came back it was just comparing the Monitor line to that B&W line
13. I like the Silver better then the B&W's

It's possible I can move into the RX6 instead of the RX2, but I did like that 8inch

I guess I should be asking if I got an ok deal or not!
$2129 for a 7.0 speaker set from Monitor Audio
I did put a deposit down and will be getting them.
I will not be bringing them here to this apartment, I will ask how long can they hold them for me or take them to someone's house.

Man, I felt so bad about what happened HAMP, but now I envy you!!

I'm so glad to hear that you liked the RX line over the RS. I think the new RX series is gorgeous, and would love to get a pair of RX-8's someday. But since I'm still new to audio and don't have any experience other than with my Polks, I need to go speaker auditioning. Don't know when I'll do that, because upgrading is a long way away for me.

Someday!

Well again, congrats on the upgrade, whatever your choose. (*cough* RX-8's )

Sounds like you've had a chance to look at some pretty good stuff, and listened to enough to make your decision easier....

You're gonna love those Monitors..... they're great speakers!

Naw, don't envy, you can still feel bad
Believe me, when I was auditioning it was at times I wish I still have the F2's at home and not doing this. I almost feel like I was made to do this instead of doing it when I felt like it.

Only thing I don't understand is 4X12 comment, that he didn't tell the difference between the RS and RX. You can turn your back and hear the difference.

Can someone please say they have heard the difference like I did!!!!!!!!

Thanks Beta Man, I thought about you when I was listening to the B&W 686's and comparing them to the B&W 685's....
Big difference in price, but no real difference in sound from the two.

the 685's was larger and had that little port, but not the 686's
