Default Speaker window shopping

Well, I decided that since I have a couple days off next week I would take my daughter (2) out with me speaker auditioning. Now I am not actually going to be buying anything, just on a speaker auditioning trip.

So I call this dealer, talking with the owner, I told him what I was up too and he was totally cool with it, I asked him what speakers do you have BTW. Dali Ikon & Concept, Canton, Monitor Audio RS6, Niles Audio(in-walls). And he said he had some Energys too that he had for a little while some C-9s and C-7s, he said he used to sell them, but after 2006(when Klipsch bought them) he couldn't stand the BS of the new owning company that he stopped and now sells the Monitors. JASONR, he sells the RS6's for $950.... I know that is a good price right? But he added, that if I get serious and want to get them if I add a RS-LCR, he would do $900....

So he tells me, Give me an hour before you come by. I will hook up a set of each in my biggest auditioning room for you and show you how to play with it all and you kick back for a while. He adds, bring a couple movies and a few CDs. I asked are blu-rays cool and he laughs and responds... do they still make DVDs? HAHAHAHAHA

Next Tuesday I get to listen to some of the best speakers made... I'm Pumped.... my wife is sooo jealous too.

Cool! I'd love to hear what you had to say about Dali's and Canton speakers.

A shame they don't have Totem's, then you'd really be in for a treat!

Not a whole lot as I haven't been speaker auditioning in quite some time, but I do know these speakers (from memory) are very good. I think that both excel at the mid-range, with a decent bottom end and sufficient high-end quickness and clarity to satisfy many a listener. I would classify these as musical speakers and they would shine in an environment where music is of paramount importance.

Their build quality and finish are superb examples of what one would expect from your better than run of the mill speakers. These speakers make an impressive statement.

SWEET.... well then I think I may just love them too cause I really really like my Energys and I know a lot of people say they are better for Music since they have the Mid-range push too. I am not a big Polk, Klipsch or KEF fan because I prefer the warmer sound to the brighter sound so NOW you have me really excited to see whats over there....

Then do tell us about your upcoming experience with them. What kind of music will you be bringing along?

I don't know,... what should I take? I used to have a ton of CDs but a 2 yr old and 5 yr old killed them.....

I was thinking some John Mayer, Michael Jackson, I have a mix CD with Tori Amos on the Piano, and some alternative music that I like(Incubis, Rise Against, Tool) plus my Incubis Blu. I was thinking of getting a few CDs from my dad too... he has some Jazzier type music... ?

Piano is a tough instrument to nail! So definately bring some of that. To get a sense of good mid-range and middle high-frequancy bring along some female vocalists. And of course some scathing guitar riffs at the higher end of the spectrum will give those tweeters a good workout as well.

Gonna be fun.

musicians you can recommend?

I love the way my Energys play music so I am excited to see how these will play.

Ricky Lee Jones' self-titled debut album would be a wonderful auditioning CD, as would Amy Winehouse's Back To Black. Tori Amos certainly, as you'll get a good sense of how a piano should sound.

If you have some classical symphonies around, bring one of those. And I'm sure that in your dad's Jazz collection you can get some tenor and alto sax that should stretch any speaker.

I would also suggest some of the music you love, like Incubus and whatever else you have in your music collection.

Most importantly, be sure you bring some tunes that you know very well. I recommended Ricky Lee Jones, because I am completely familiar with that album (one of my top 3 fave albums). I have it on vinyl (several times) and also on CD. Looking forward to getting it on SACD soon.

John

The Beatles "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" is one of many tracks I use when auditioning...... it has a lot of subtle details.......

Also..... make sure your kid doesn't touch any speakers..... the shop sees it as collateral damage that they accept..... but I've auditioned a lot of speakers with bashed in tweeters

I use a lot of acoustic guitar tracks, piano, and sax heavy jazz too.

Thanks Beta, She is pretty good, she knows not to touch the ones at home. And she is usually quite shy when she is in a strange place. But I will be keeping an eye on here... he said the Dalis are like $4500 and I don't have that kind of coin.

This is pretty cool callas. So, you never worked with this dealer before? I am totally jealous that you live in CA and have places like this to go audition speakers. There is nothing around here that has that kind of quality speaker for me to listen to. Enjoy your time with your daughter too!

No I have never been to this place, I was simply looking at Energys website and saw that they were listed as a dealer and wanted to see what all they had there so I could compare mine to theirs... especially if they had the RC series. Turns out he is still an authorized dealer but he doesn't stock or push them because he can't stand Klipschs ownership and the way things changed.

Yeah, its nice to be in California or any major city like Chicago, Detroit, NY or Miami. Forsberg, you can totally fly out here and go with me, let me know and I will give you a room to stay in and drive you to all the places you want to audition speakers...

If I ever get the "free" time, you just never know....I may very well take you up on your offer callas.....thanks!
