Default 7.1 on Onkyo 605s?

I received my second set of Polk speakers a little while ago, and noticed after I hooked them up that now the sound comes out of the front (Polk 60s and Polk CS1) and rear speakers, but not the side speakers (Polk 50s). At any given time it can only output sound to five speakers, despite all seven being wired to the receiver. This same is true even when I'm watching blu-rays with 7.1 sound (Repo and 3:10 to Yuma).

On the menu there is a diagram that shows all seven speakers, two of which are not highlighted. I'm wondering if there is an option on the Onkyo 605s that would allow me to implement these two speakers.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

First make sure you have your surrounds speakers, which are on the sides, wired into the surround connections, and that your surround back speakers, which are behind you, are wired into the surround back connections. I only say this because we've seen multiple instances of people getting them reversed. Make sure bi-amping is not turned on, and then once you've verified all connections are correct try to re-run Audyssey. Audyssey should detect the new speakers and run test tones through them to set the distances, levels, etc. If all you're doing is hooking the speakers up and not running Audyssey, then the receiver probably doesn't know they're there, as it's set up for 5.1. Remember also that the surround back speakers will see the least use of all the speakers in your system.

Did you re-run Audyssey? It's a must to get those working. Also make sure your wiring is correct.

Have you ran the audyssey setup again ? You may need to do that first so that your receiver can see and calibrate the new speakers.

I double checked my connections, re-wired the whole system when I received the newest set of speakers. The rears do not have the capacity to bi-amp, but I was bi-amping four of the three Polk speakers.

Where would I find Audyssey and why mustn't I use bi-amping? I thought bi-amping made for better sound.

I have an Onkyo 605 and it's impossible to bi-amp more than the mains (front left and right). You do this by removing the jumpers from your speakers, and connecting the bottom terminals of your mains to the front left/right terminals of your receiver. Then you connect the top terminals of your speakers to the surround back/left terminals of the receiver and turn bi-amping on in the menu. If you've never done this, then my guess is you won't have to turn it off. You might be bi-wiring something, but that's not the same thing. Anyway, to run Audyssey all you do is take the microphone that came with the receiver and plug it into the port on the front of the receiver and Audyssey starts to run automatically.

I'm going to guess it's a typo where you said you were "bi-amping four of the three Polk speakers".

If your 605 is anything like my 606 (and I think it is in this regard) you can not bi-amp the front L and R and still maintain a 7.1 system. Thats because you use the speaker outputs to the rear surround speakers to drive the front speakers once the bridge is removed from the speakers. Remove bi-amp as an option.

That's correct. The 605 is exactly the same way.

Can't find the microphone that came with the receiver. Turned off the bi-amping, so now the sound has shifted from the rear speakers to the side speakers. Still a 5.1 systems but at least I'm using all my Polk speakers.

For the time being I'll keep an eye out for that microphone. Thanks. If I can't find the mic, maybe something from radio shack will do the trick.

Check your receiver and make sure that you have ONLY speaker A turned on. If speaker B is on with speaker A also on, you will only get 5.1 sound from your set up.

I haven't been able to find mention of this on the Set Up Menu. Where might I find this option?

It's actually called Zone 2 in the Onkyo, and it's on page 87 of your owner's manual. If you don't have a copy of the manual then I strongly suggest you download it. Bootman posted the link for it a few posts above. Download and save it as a PDF document and you can reference it any time you need to.

I'm reading the manual now. All I could find was instructions on setting up 7.1 channel setup with 2-channel stereo for Zone 2. I don't have any speakers left for Zone 2, but I'll try these instructions and see if it allows the 7.1 even without any hardware for the Zone 2 to implement.

You can't use 7.1 and Zone 2 at the same time. If you use Zone 2, then all you can use for Zone 1 (the main system) is 5.1.

Its getting pretty late. I'll look for a mic at radio shack tomorrow and run Audyssey when I get back from work.

Verbatim from the Manual (Page 83) "This setup allows 7.1-channel playback in your main listening room and 2-channel stereo playback in Zone 2, with a different source in each room."

And yet earlier it reads "Note that when Powered Zone 2 is turned off, you can enjoy 7.1-channel playback in your main room."

I'll take your word that the Zone 2 must be turned off. Upon checking it didn't seem to be on in the first place. So I'm back to Audyssey. Check in with you guys tomorrow. Thanks.

It's my understanding that you shouldn't use just any microphone. It might be best to contact Onkyo and see about getting a factory replacement. I hope someone will correct me if I'm incorrect.

Well I won't be picking up a karaoke type mic or anything of the kind. I do remember what the mic looks like and will ask someone at radio shack if they have something similar.

If you frequent an electronics store or know someone that works in one you could ask if you can borrow the mic from one of their store displayed Onkyo's. That's what a friend did when he moved to another state. He lost his mic and was too far for me to just drive over with mine. I would suggest using the Onkyo mic over anything else. It's worth buying a new one from Onkyo support if you can't borrow one or find your old one.
