I'd never heard of this for XBox games. I had dozens and never had the problem. Just the "dirty disc" error . . . y'know, the typical errors

I actually do feel bad when I read someone invited friends over to watch Knocked up and gave up after 4 re-tries and ended up watching the SDVD side of the $40 disc.

If he just knew about the boiling thing.

Yeah it was usually to take care of the dirty disc errors that people got from brand new discs. The biggest culprit was from demo discs though. My guess is that they were made cheaper. I'm sure you can connect the dots. Xbox discs don't work, made on the cheap, had to boil. HD DVD discs don't work, made on the cheap....
