RGB was set to normal. I've tried resetting everything - unfortunately, nothing is working. I've tried Yamaha support, but can't get anyone that is helpful. You guys have been a much bigger help! Alas, still no luck, however...

does anything connected through your receiver (hdmi) work, or is it only the bluray player giving the trouble?

I see you said you turned on standy through (page 42) at one point. You don't get any video when you put the receiver in standby either? This should at least work as the receiver isn't doing anything to it. Of course it shouldn't do anything if your resolution is set to through either but the receiver is essentially off in standby. If this is the case then maybe your cables don't play along together. You could always buy two new cables to try and if no change take them back.

This might be a good time to tell how beautiful of a picture you'll get with component?

crack: cable box works fine through the receiver with HDMI cable.

dj: Cables are identical, brand new, Phillips gold-plated.

So does that mean you tried putting the receiver in standby to see if you got video that way?

The last thing I've got to offer is try turning off Viera link (HDAVI Control) on the player and the TV if it haves it. I know I've read in other threads that Sony's version of this has caused some issues so maybe.

sorry for the delay in responding to your pm, ive been away on a leave of absence (or thats what im calling it ) so i was unable to respond. but i believe that the issue i was having with no video is etiher due to a) the dvi connection to my rphdtv, or b) the onkyo interferring. what i had to do to get it to work was connect an additional video cable (component for me) to the receiver. since the receiver will output the component video through hdmi, i didnt need to switch the tv. i assigned the compoent video to the 'vcr' mode on my receiver and deselect the hdmi connection in the set up menue of the receiver so only the component was would be used. i then had to make sure that the hdmi video connection on the panny was off. then, i could go back into the receiver set up and changed the component video to hdmi. once i did that, then the other selections besides "hdmi on/off" was available to use. i selected the 1080i resolution for hdmi BEFORE i turned on the hdmi video connection on the player. i also found that sometimes the player would default back to automatic if i left the player on too long after i turned of the tv and receiver so i would have to reset everything.

anyway, hope it worked out for u

DJ: yes, I put the receiver in standby. no video

un4: That's quite confusing, but basically I think you attached a dummy component cable to allow you to change settings on the receiver that you couldn't otherwise?

yeah i know it can be confusing. but basically the component allowed me to see the player menu. having to assign it on the receiver instead of hdmi for the player at first so it allowed me to use the same input on my tv (hdmi to dvi) so it was one less thing to deal with. when i did switch the resolution setting on the player, i was vewing it on component cables. then i switched on the hdmi connection on the player. when that happened it went to 1080i on hdmi. then i changed the 'vcr' connection on the receiver from component to hdmi and the picture came back in 1080i via hdmi. im not sure how i can explain it so its any clearer. but if your receiver is anything like my onk 705, you should be able to follow what i did. the biggest pain was having to go in and out of my receivers set up menu a few times. what i did was the only way i could find to change the video settings on the panny with my set up.

im gonna go back and see if i can write down, numbering the steps from a fresh hook up to see if i can clear up the confusion.

k, here we go...

i hooked up the player to my receiver via hdmi and component to the receivers component input 1 and hdmi input 1.

the receiver is hooked up to tv via hdmi out to tv dvi input. i select the tvs dvi input then forget it because my receiver will output component in via hdmi and the receiver set up menu is set to output via hdmi as well.

in my receivers set up menu i assing component input 1 to 'vcr' (hdmi is not assigned yet) and exit. the player should show up. i configure the compent resolution on the player.

in the player menu (viewing via component), under tv/device connection, and then under hdmi connection, hdmi resolution is unselectable regardless if hdmi is on of off on the player.

with the player menu still up, i bring up my receiver menu which overides the input video, and assing hdmi 1 to 'vcr' so that both component and hdmi are assigned. exit. now the player menu is shown.

back into hdmi connection on the player menu, hdmi resolution now selectable as well as the other settings. i changed the resolution from 1080p to 1080i and configure the rest BUT not the hdmi on/off. only turn hdmi to on when your done with the other settings.

back into the recevier menu, i deselect the component input from 'vcr' so that only hdmi is assigned. ext.

now viewing player menu via hdmi in 1080i.

as i said before, if i turn off the tv and or receiver first, sometimes the player resets itself so i have to do this again. so i make sure i tun off the player completely first then everything else so i dont have to do this again but i leave the component cables hooked up just in case.

i hope i made it easier to follow this time

edit: forgot to mention besides turning it off first so it doest reset itself, but also to turn it on last when you watch a movie.
