I think this post better explains your position. Most consider Ratatouille and Iron Man reference quality blus, but I do see what you're saying--since they are recent and were filmed in high quality, they still do look good on blu. On the other hand, older films that never had a quality disc released look significantly better with blu treatment, a la The Searchers. Makes sense, although I love getting some of the recent reference quality discs. For me, I refuse to blind buy and only try to buy films I will watch over and over. I also have refused to buy films that I owned on dvd (I had a large collection of dvds that were stolen last year), so right now I am just buying ones I had not previously owned. My criteria is simple: is this a film I would watch multiple times? Is the blu of high quality, video and audio? Is the blu under $20, assuming it isn't a box set? If the answer is yes for each of these, I will consider buying it. At the same time, like many on this site, I shop around and look for the best prices. I actually recently got three movies that have rarely been sold for less than $19 via the trading forum on this site. Welcome. |

I also know what you mean about some movies not being worth the blu upgrade. For me, comedies are a perfect example. My Cousin Vinny is my favorite comedy but I think paying $20 for a blu of it instead of $8 for the dvd is pointless, bc imo comedies are not greatly improved by the addition of better video and audio quality. Blockbusters, pixar films, classics--these are some that I think are improved.

I've basically put all my Blu-Ray purchases on hold. I'm back in school and in another city in another province for 14 of the next 18 months. And even though I have a Blu-Ray drive and it works, it doesn't work 100%, so I'm basically going to hold off on getting any Blu-Rays for an extended period of time. I'm only going to pick up the Kevin Smith 3 pack, STAR TREK and the ultimate cut of WATCHMEN by the end of the year because those are the ones that I REALLY want. Everything else is just upgrades that I'm sure years later will be a lot cheaper to get.

![]() I have no idea what you mean? I agree that film is film and that if you like a film it should be enjoyable whether you watch it on dvd or blu, but as all of us blu ray junkies on this site know, watching a film on blu can greatly enhance the enjoyment of the film. that being said, your statement confuses me. |

The Big Kahuna is one of my top 10 favorite movies, I've owned it on Pan and Scan and Widescreen, watch it a lot. Don't think I will upgrade it, though. 7.1 surround would a bit superfluous with most of the dialogue coming from the center speaker. Maybe could here the bathroom door open a little more clearly. And for a DVD, it looks good, and my DVD player doesn't even upconvert (my PS3 won't play R1 DVDs) |

If its under 20 with tax it's worth a purchase. I buy for not only myself but for my parents. They usually get first watch because of the sub-par vizio I gave them, hey if it looks good on my old TV I know it will look good on my plasmas. Everyone has a budget and it sucks not to get every movie you want on blu. With Best Buys latest sale I found myself putting everything I wanted under 20 in the cart and went back threw the list getting rid of what I really didn't think I could get now. On top of that I was checking out amazon and seeing which was cheaper. You should never have to spend 30 bucks on a blu unless you really want to. I have only paid full price for only a handful of blus becuase I couldn't wait.
Getting close to that 300 mark !!! |

Some people enjoy collecting. Count me in on that notion. I've made a few blind buys, but I'm also pretty easygoing when it comes to watching movies, so any disappointment is not bad enough to make a stink about. Sure, some titles really stand out for me, but for the most part, I can watch just about everything. I have watched all of my BDs - many more than once, and several many times.
![]() I love the audio improvement of Blu-ray as well as the video. I have only a few titles which do not have a lossless or uncompressed multichannel audio track (Speed Racer and The Bucket List immediately come to mind). Regarding differing views on the subject, I can also understand the view of not buying so much, either because of not having a "need" to own the movies, rental preference (need only to watch one time), or the feeling that the DVD is fine. |

I completely disagree and I think Travis provided a great explanation that many on this site would agree with. Do comedies look and sound better on blu? Yes, but is it really necessary to upgrade when in most cases it is not significantly better? No. Keep in mind what this thread is about: buying with a budget. Travis is right: comedy does NOT benefit from HD. HD encompasses both picture and sound. Does a film based on dialogue, rather than depth, detail, and emmersive sound benefit much from the upgrade over dvd? Absolutely not imo, and in the opinion of most of the ppl I have spoken with on this site. If it somehow improves the viewing of the movie for you, that is great. I just don't think it does for most ppl. |

Yes the thread is about being and buying on a limited budget. If you LOVE a comedy that you watch a few times a year then by all means get it on Blu Ray. And yes it's gonna look better of course.
But I feel the same way, as the others,I have lots of comedy movies but ZERO on Blu Ray right now. I rented a few just too see if I would appreciate the films more and I didn't. Renting and seeing The 40 Year Old Virgin on Blu Ray and The Wedding Crashers didn't do ANYTHING to make me go buy them, in place of other films. It's like do I really need "Easy Money" (love the movie) on Blu Ray? My preference is a "no" I don't. I'll save the money for Ben Hur, Scarface or Titanic, Poseidon Adventure,Jurassic Park, The Sting etc... But perhaps a comedy one like "City Slickers" that has some really cool scenery would be very pleasant to watch. Makes sense as I have found Westerns to be my favorite Blu Rays overall. Also "Midnight Run" with it's cross between comedy and action adventure plus cross country scenery would make a nice addition on Blu Ray Maybe there are some like "Young Frankenstein" that can really use the blu ray lift? Some other Mel Brooks or something. How are the Black & Whites ob Blu Ray? They must be fantastic I'll bet. I don't own any yet, was thinking about Raging Bull but can live with the Criterion one. Psycho would just be too tempting for me not to get lol |

1) All new films I buy are Blu-ray.
2) If it is a catalogue and I have not bought it on DVD yet, I can wait for it to be released on Blu-ray. 3) If it is a catalogue title that I own, I wait for the reviews and decide to buy only if the upgrade is very significant. I stopped buying films on DVD completely; they are better on Blu-ray. |

Didn't really read through the whole thread. What BDs do I buy? Same answer as always: the movies I really like and that offer lots of replay value. I usually wait for a decent price unless it is something I just gotta have on release date.
