Default Why no outrage for lack of purchase options?

When I bought my Blu player I did so with the understanding that the movies would be a bit higher in price than DVDs. Anytime a new format comes along that's the case.

However, when I can purchase a DVD in single-disc, double-disc, and sometimes three-disc versions at reasonable prices, I'm not given such options when it comes to Blu. I'm usually forced to buy the two-disc or three-disc version for, at times, more than twice the two-disc DVD version.

As much as I love UP, I just can't justify paying $30 for two more discs that I just don't ever plan to use. And that's just one example, but Disney really is the worst when it comes to milking the customer for every nickel on it's products.

Has anyone heard of any plans of the video industry to start selling single-disc Blu versions of new movies?

Most blu-rays are single disc. Also, UP is only like $22 on Amazon. And if you give it a few weeks, it'll be $15 used at most places.

Yes, of course Disney wants your money. They're a for-profit company, they're not running a charity.

My advice is quit complaining and learn to shop smarter. If you're spending $30 on a blu-ray, you're spending far too much.

Nope, they arent gonna stop their cash cow. I also would MUCH prefer just the film and skip all the extras and all the other crap. Just. The. Film. Please.

But, aint gonna happen. Just wait for UP to come down in price or find a used version here on the forums. The trading forum is a great place to buy and sell discs.

Because folks here have learned over time that the industry releases movies to those who will pay top dollar FIRST, then will release the anemic single-disc versions later for people that are so 'outraged' that they won't buy until a walmart bargain-bin-ready version is released.

Once Blu's are similarly priced to DVD's of today, you'll see an even BIGGER adoption rate. Until then, the industry is making money off of both Blu and DVD. And they're OK with that.

UP $30? I remember when someone here posted a thread a few months back that UP was $45 at Amazon and the new members started freaking out. That was funny.

exactly!!! people really have no reason to complain about prices....esp. right now w/all of the deals amazon is running!!!

i personally think $17.99 for a bunch of pre-orders is great...esp. when most stores will have them $24+ on release day!!!

i mean come on!!! i'm getting a Harry Potter 6 blu-ray for cheaper than what the 2 disc standard dvd will cost more than likely!!!

You might want to shop elsewhere for your new releases, Borders and Barnes&Noble are making you bitter.

You are so right...if I were you, I would stick to buying the cheap DVD versions of Up. Let's see, the SRP for the single-disk edition DVD is $29.99...the SRP for the 2-DVD edition + digital copy is $39.99. Course I hope you are checking Amazon and you can get those two for $16.99 and $21.99 respectively. Or you can get the Blu edition for $1 more at $22.99. Or you could get $10 off the Blu (this doesn't apply to the DVD versions) by getting Monsters, Inc, at the same time on Blu, bringing the 4 disc edition of Up (2 Blu-rays, a DVD, and digital copy) down to $4 less than the single disc edition DVD. You can then sell the DVD out of it for $5, bringing it down to $7.99....which you leaves you with the Up Blu-rays at $9 less than buying that single DVD edition.

Ok, so a quick look at Amazon shows:
Up 1 disc DVD
MSRP - 29.99
Amazon - 16.99 (43% off)

Up 2 disc DVD
MSRP - 39.99
Amazon - 21.99 (45% off)

Up 4 Disc BD + DVD
MSRP - 45.99
Amazon - 22.99 (50% off)

So lets assume for a second that a single disc BD release would have a 34.99 MSRP and get the same discount the single disc DVD version does...

UP 1 Disc BD (Hypothetical)
MSRP - 34.99
Amazon - 19.95 (hypothetical 43% off)

1 disc cost = 19.95
4 disc cost = 22.99 (includes DVD and Digital Copy)

Are you seriously quibbling over what amounts to $3?

With Blu-ray, there is already the perception that you will be paying a premium for a higher quality product to begin with. Some people expect that premium to include all of the "bells and whistles", so it makes perfect sense that there are limited options for multiple versions of a release.

The single-disc DVD is meant for the budget minded consumer. The double/triple disc version is for the consumer who wants everything. If you already own a Blu-ray player, you've already invested in the format and have shown you want the best that your money can buy. Most people wouldn't consider it to be the "best" if it didn't at least include the same bonus features as it's fully featured DVD counterpart.

Maybe its just me but when I buy the Blu-ray I expect the top of the line DVD sku or even something better. Maybe thats just becuase I precieve as Blu-ray as being the premium and higher quality product.

I'm so sick of reading posts with people complaining about how extra discs (particularly Digital Copy and/or DVD copy discs) are forcing them to pay "extra" for those movies over other single disc movies.

On average, I really haven't seen movies with these options included costing more than most single-disc Blu-Ray releases. Most variantion in price has more to do with the studio releasing the movie than whether or not any additional discs are included.

And as others have pointed out, with the coupons and deals going on right now, it's easy to get Up for a good price (and even the standard Amazon price of $22.99 is already very good for a new Blu-Ray).

Heck, look at the recent Snow White release, which was 3 discs total (The movie on Blu-Ray, the 2nd disc with bonus features, and the movie on DVD). The thing quickly went to $19.99 on sites like Amazon. And there were those $10 coupons/coupon codes for the movie all over the place. You could this 3-disc set for about $10!

Also, I think the OP is having some selective memory on these "options" that the DVD versions give the consumer. A few years ago, the trend of having 2 or more versions of a movie released with one having more features/discs than the other wasn't the norm (the only different editions released back then were mainly Widescreen and Fullscreen... with most everything else beign the same).

For example, when the first two Spider-Man movies first came out on DVD, they were 2-disc sets by default. There was no 1-disc version and separate 2-disc version.

And, as I recall, movies like that typically retailed for $19.99 in stores like Best Buy, etc, initially, with them having first-week of release sale prices typically ranging from about $15 to $18.

Then later on, the trend changed to this separate 1 and 2 disc version nonsense. This has become common practice (and was in place when Spider-Man 3 came out on DVD). Now, upon their initial release, the 1-disc versions tend to go for the $19.99 retail/$15-$18 first week sale prices, with the special 2-disc versions usually going for around $22 to $25.

On average, you aren't getting a better deal with those single disc options, and you never really were. It's just an illusion of a better deal, but you are really paying the same money that you always were, and are getting less for it. The studios just found a way to essentially gouge the movie-enthusiasts who wanted the extra features, and still get the same money out of the more casual consumers that they would be getting anyway.

I actually like the way Blu-Ray is right now overall. I'm not really a fan of digital copies (and I think putting them on discs is kind of wasteful when they expire), but as long as they aren't adding to my costs, I really don't care if they are there. I like having a lot of extra, and options included for the same, existing price. Blu-Ray is becoming more and more affordable and the options have generally been growing, so all in all it's a good thing for the consumer. I'd rather them leave things the way that they are rather than making separate editions and charging the consumer more for the extras.

I guarantee you, if there were 2 versions of UP on Blu-Ray.... a 1 or 2 disc version, and then this 4 disc version, the 4 disc version would be even more expensive than it is now, and the 1 or 2 disc version would cost what the 4-disc version currently costs. You wouldn't be saving money. You'd just be getting less for what you are paying.

Disney prices suck

$39.99 SRP - Catalog with old extras
$44.99 SRP - Catalog wth new extras
$44.99 SRP - New to video releases

Personally, if I'm paying $25 for Hero on Blu-ray Disc, I want the bloody DVD AND Digital Copy. There is no bloody way, an extra featurete should add a $5 premium to a retail price.

As for the pricing for Up:

Best Buy will have it for $23.99 plus for an extra $4.99 you can get a talking Dug plush. So for the same $30 you'd pay just for Up, I could get the Blu-ray Disc, a DVD for my family to borrow, and a digital copy I can load on my iPod for when I travel. Oh, and I'd have a talking Dug toy in my house.

Oh and here is the Amazon.com page for Up:

Up at Amazon.com

Scroll down to Best Value and tada: $37.48 with free super saving shipping gets you Up and Monster's Inc. That's $18.74 each!
