Question problem w/ Mac mini with a 40" Sony xbr9 VGA input

Long story short: when I use a VGA cable to connect the Sony xbr9 tv with my mac mini, the tv doesn't even show that the input is being used...yet when I plug the same VGA cord into a Dell laptop it mirrors on the tv just fine so I'm positive it's not the cord...u guys might like this part too....I called Sony tech support and they put me on hold for ten miutes only to come up with: "did you try unplugging the cable and reconnecting it?"...apple tech suggested the tv may require a firmware update....please help....I'm ready to dropkick either the tv or the mac

shot in the dark, but is their not some way you can get the mini to "detect displays", with my computer sometimes between hooking up to the tv, disconnecting, shutting down, reconnecting etc.... it does not register and i manually have to select "detect displays" in order for it to register.

Also the macmini resolution - is it set to a resolution that the SonyVGA input syncs to?
