Default 1.85:1 aspect ratio

Hello everyone,
I'm sure that this has been covered, but I could not find all the answers I needed. I have a Panasonic TC-P50S1 Plasma, along with Phillips Blu-Ray player. I realize that a film shot in a 1.85:1 aspect ratio should have tiny black bars at the top and bottom. As a bit of a purist, I would like to see the movie in its orginal aspect ratio. I can not find any settings wwhich will produce the black bars at the top and bottom. Any help would be appreciated.

Do you see an option for 1:1 pixel mapping? Or one to turn what is called Overscan off?

That will get you the "black bars"

Thank you for your reply,
I've seen a couple of people referring to the "overscan". Would that option be common amongst widescreen tv's? I can't seem to find that option in any of the menus.

Here's the manual for your tv:
http://service.us.panasonic.com/OPERMANPDF/TCP42S1.pdf

According to the picture on the Identifying Controls page, the aspect ratio button is just above the number pad and is called Format, cycle through til you get the setting you want.

Yes, over scan is on (as far as I know) all tvs.

Here's what it is:

Quote:
The amount of picture area that gets cropped off along the edges of a television screen. Zero percent overscan means the television does not crop off any of the incoming picture. Overscan is often set intentionally at the factory to be 5 percent, or even higher along the edges, to ensure the screen is full at all times regardless of fluctuations in brightness (which can change the overall picture size) or nonstandard signals, such as those from camcorders or video games.

Edit: Also, welcome to the site

Different brands call it different things, like Samsung calls it JustScan mode.

No problem

yeah. I also prefer watching everything in it's original aspect ratio.

Several Imax movies are on Blu-Ray 3D in the 1.77:1 aspect ratio instead of their original 1.43:1 aspect ratio.
