Default Blu-ray audio stops when movie starts

I recently purchased a Sony Vaio FW series laptop w/a Blu-ray player. I connected the latop to my Sony Bravia XBR HDTV with an HDMI cable. The audio played through my TV through the previews and the movie menu, but when I start the movie the audio no longer plays. What am I missing here?? Hopefully this is an easy fix...I'm new to all this so don't even really know where to start!

The menu and previews on a blu-ray are standard Dolby Digital 5.1 and then it switches to one of the lossless codecs once the actual movie begins. This is likely the problem. Try playing the movie again, but select the lossy Dolby Digital or DTS track and see if that makes a difference. I don't know that TVs are able to process the lossless audio formats.

I would have to agree with fireman here unless your Vaio is able to process lossless codecs you would not be able to use HD audio. Try going to the disk setup menu and pick Dolby Digital or DTS and you should be able to get audio.

I don't think that's the problem. The HDMI handshake should take care of any mismatches between the TV's capabilities and the audio track that the player outputs. Besides, very few discs even offer a seperate legacy track that can be selected from the audio/language menu.

What BDs did you try? Do they all have DTS tracks? TVs can decode DD 5.1 since that's a format used on digital televison broadcasts. But, they can't decode DTS. Perhaps you should try forcing your Vaio BD player to output stereo PCM. There should be a configuration setting for that.

Pretty much every disc I own has one.

You have a rather eclectic collection then. Please list some of your titles.

Warner Bros. TrueHD releases offer DD 5.1 on the disc audio menu along with TrueHD. But, most other studios simply rely on the embedded companion legacy track in the TrueHD package. I am not aware of any dts-MA releases that offer a DTS track on the menu. They all rely on the player to send the legacy core track for connections that do not support lossless.

It's not just the TrueHD tracks that have an accompanying legacy track. Anything with Uncompressed PCM will also have DD 5.1, several of which Fireman has in his collection (I clicked the link that lists his titles ).

However, I agree with regard to the DTS-HD MA tracks. I'm not aware of one that also has just the core DTS track that can be selected from the menu.

I double checked and you are correct about DTS MA tracks. I was wrong about those. My apologies for putting out inaccurate information. You can see my entire blu-ray collection by clicking the link under my avatar.

That's not a requirement of the format and it is not always the case with discs where the lossless track is PCM. But, yes, that is usually the case. It's also an increasingly small subset of BD releases. These days nearly all BDs use TrueHD or dts-MA.

Default Thanks for the info!

My BD (I only have one so far!) had the Dolby Digital format for other languages but not for English. I tried Spanish and I could hear the audio, so it definitely appears to be an issue with the audio format. I'll try configuring the BD player on the laptop and see if that works.

Sorry to jump in on a thread with a different issue, but I have almost the exact OPPOSITE problem happening for me.

I only have three BDs with special features on them (I also have planet earth which hasn't had any problems), but all three of them play audio fine for the movie portion, but have no audio for any of the extras. I have been able to get the audio to work, but I need to go to the AV settings and switch from Linear PCM to bitstream (and then flip back if need be) for them to kick in.

I'm using a PS3 80gb which is connected via hdmi to my Sony KDL40-v5100 TV. I called Sony and asked them about it and they didn't really have any idea what was wrong (PS3 said it was a TV problem, TV said it was a PS3 problem). If anyone has an idea what could be causing this (it's especially strange to me since I would think that the OP problem would be more likely to occur) I would really appreciate it. Thanks.
