Stupid Question. Do I need to update to 3.01 to play Tekken or God of war collection?

I have not updated to 3.01 because of all the problems that people have said they had after updating.I really wanted to buy God of war collection tomorrow and I just wanted to know if I had to update to 3.01 to be able to play the game. Also has there been any games that have been released in the past month that you have to update yur system to 3.01

if you want to play Tekken online then yes. I wouldn't think you would need to for God of War. If your ps3 isn't up to date it just wont log into to PSN.

God of War collection maybe but it's not even out yet so can't say for certain but Tekken probably not unless doing it online then maybe.

The problems with the update are only on some people but most people don't have any problems with the update like myself.

Not true 3.01 wasn't a mandatory update(though fixed the freezing in Uncharted) but it doesn't ask you to update when signing on only the 3.00 did that but 3.01 didn't. So if he's running at 3.00 then he can still sign on anytime.

To be honest last time i updated was the one before 3.00 lol.

I see then in that case yeah probably might need an update but like mentioned 3.10 is coming out soon

Just to make sure everybody understands that it doesnt matter about me connecting to PSN I just care about being able to play ps3 games even if that means not playing online. thats why i was seeing if I had to update to 3.01 just to play offline.

3.01 works fine. 3.00 had minor compatibility issues (with Uncharted) but nothing big. Don't worry about updating, you'll be fine.

Your not having any problems with 3.01? Blu rays, games, etc. work fine? None of it stops or freezes or has trouble reading blu rays?

When you pop in your game, it will tell you if it needs an update or not and it'll update the firmware from the disc rather than having to download it.

3.00 had issues NOT 3.01

I'm not aware of any issues with firmware 3.00. Uncharted 1 had some weird freezing issues with 3.00 but that's what 3.01 corrected...

Nope none. Like I said, 3.00 had a minor compatibility issue with Uncharted, which was fixed in 3.01. All the talk about hardware failures due to firmware are false and/or coincidence.
Every time a firmware update is released there are a number of topics about how "FW X.XX killed my BD Drive" or whatever. If anything *actually* happened, their system just coincidentally broke after the update, NOT because of it. People's systems break all the time, with 26+ million consoles sold to-date it is logical that on any given day a number of systems will break, even at 1% failure rate (don't know the actual number).

EDIT: I should mention, this trend seems to have begun after firmware 1.40 (I think), where there was a small chance of peoples consoles "bricking" from the FW. This was confirmed by Sony, only affected a small percentage of consoles, and wasn't a hardware problem. After that though, maybe people became paranoid?

exactly, a FW update is not going to cause your hardware to fail, some had software freezing issues, but those have all been corrected, there shouldnt be any trouble updating to the newest firmware. OP, dont listen to anyone saying that it crashed their PS3, its either a coincidence or BS

It was 2.40. Like you said, it didn't actually brick any console, but it did prevent a few from booting until the hard drive was reformatted. My understanding is that newer firmwares have extra restore options now to help prevent that kind of problem in the future.
