The early seasons were filmed in 4:3 standard definition, so there would be no point to a Blu-ray release - there is no HD source, so no HD Blu-ray can be made without upscaling (which is what an upscaling DVD player can do with your DVDs). It looked like season 4 was going to come out on BD, but that never panned out - the DVDs are 4:3 though, so I wouldn't be surprised if season 4 was also stuck in standard definition land.
Season 5 is airing in widescreen now and I think they're using HD - so season 5 on Blu-ray should at least be technically possible. Hopefully it will come out on BD. |

It's airing in widescreen now, but it still looks pretty crappy. I think it's just an upscale from standard def digital video.

Incase any one is looking to grab up the first three seasons for cheap, each is on sale at Target for $18.99 each. Pretty sweet deal, even for standard def. Just checked Amazon and they have the 3rd season for $18.99, oh and the 1st and 2nd are sold together for $21.99 on Amazon and $18.99 at Target. Last edited by carpaltonnel; 10-16-2009 at 01:08 PM. I am getting it on some format, that's for sure, but someone over on AVS confirmed the BD is not HD, just an upconvert. Apparently it even has a message before the episode starts saying so. So if that's the case, I may just grab the DVD. I'll wait and see the price on both come Tuesday.

Yeah I bought the Blu-ray, and might as well just have gotten the DVD. I'm sure there's a bit of a difference though. But it's only $3 I would save, not a big deal. |

Well, it's got a much higher bitrate than DVD (18 mbps) and lossless sound. Both of which wouldn't be possible with the limited space of a DVD.
So yeah, the picture is an upconvert, but it's gonna be better quality than the DVD due to fewer compression artifacts, and the sound is not lossy like the DVD. So there is at least some saving grace. Hey, at least they're trying to offer the best quality possible considering the source. And at $17, it's cheaper than the DVD. So you can't really complain all that much. EDIT: the price changed on Amazon, it's now about $1 more than the DVD, but who cares? Oh yeah, did I mention it's hilariuos!! |

Watched this last night while doing cardio and got laughing so hard I almost flipped myself off the Gazelle.
There's a lot of weird ringing in some scenes from the upconvert, but other scenes really do look pretty fantastic given the limits of the source. And it sounds great. If you love this show, it's a must-own ... and they do take advantage of the fact that it's not on broadcast television. Brutally funny. I won't spoil the details, but the best-looking scene is Frank's dream, which is presented in a way that I can't even explain without spoiling a hilarious surprise. (Danny DeVito has never been afraid to play vile, but he's absolutely fearless in this.) |

For the first time in over a year I actually purchased the DVD version of a movie/show when a blu-ray was available. I took advantage of the goldbox $44.99 offer yesterday for seasons 1-4 and got the DVD christmas special for just $6.99. Given the fact that it's just upconverted anyway and I saved $10 off the blu-ray price I opted to go for it. I must admit that it was weird not buying the blu-ray version though.

Well after reading the review, and looking at the screenshots, I'm glad I opted for the dvd version at the cheap price I got it for. I'm not really sure why they even decided to release this as a blu-ray anyway. I suppose just to make more money

Obviously they expected people to question the picture quality because a feature included on a Blu-ray is one of the creators (the guy who plays Mac) and the producer reading a letter from FOX to the audience about why the feature was upconverted.

I'm happy with the BD version. I paid $2 more, and got a version with maybe slightly better upconverting than my player can do, and a lossless audio track. I also got a short little video of Rob being rude to Rickety Cricket that is presumably not on the DVD.
Would I have upgraded to this BD if I already owned the DVD? Absolutely not. But for a $2 difference, I'll choose the BD, thank you very much. |
