PS3: Copying games from disc to drive - Blu-ray Forum

Just got a PS3 (after wising up a little

) and can't find an option on the interface to copy the game to play from the hard drive, to reduce stress on the disc drive and improve load time, etc. Anyone know how? Or is the PS3 architecture different?

Some games can install and some can't. If it has an install, it'll take place in game.

There is no way to copy the entire game to the hard disk and play it off of there. Installs are the closest you're gonna get.

Yeah. Musashi is right. You can only do install but not copy games. Copying games would also eat your hard drive space.

Just a little side note: most games don't have an install option, but among those that do, there are two cases:

- mandatory: the game will install automatically when you start it up the first time
- optional: for those, you can usually find the install launch in the options menu.

In general, I tend to install all my games that have the option, since it marginally reduces load times.

Installs you usually eat up about 2-5 GB depending on which game that has it but in the long run it's worth it but there are ones out there that still have long load times but others load times are non-existant pratically. But just remember installing the game is better no matter what.

There are also some games that are both on disc and on the psn. In which case you can get the whole game on your ps3, which I personally prefer.

PS3 doesn't need it like the 360 did. The only reason this option is available for the 360 is because the stupid DVD drive keeps destroying discs... And that it's easier to copy a 5-9 gig game from a DVD than a 20-50 gig game from a Blu Ray.

...not to mention that some discs (I'm looking at you Metal Gear Solid 4) have 30+ GB of data on them. Installing them would eat most/all/more HD space than you have on your PS3.
