Default Bigger speakers always better?

I might get rid of my center speaker and mains and buy a pair of Polk M30's. I sit about 5 ft away from my 26 inch LCD and I was wondering if I get bookshelf speakers will they sound worse than satellite speakers if I sit that close to my TV?

The will not sound worse than satellites. Because of the size and quality of the drivers and crossovers, they should sound better. But then again, it depends on what satellites you are comparing them to.

They definitely won't sound bad, just be sure to not keep them too far apart, since your viewing area is a short distance from the display.

its not how big of a speaker, but the quality of it as well.

physics tells it all. a good pair of bookshelves will outmatch a smaller satellite speaker. a small three inch woofer will not reproduce what a bookshelve can, no matter what brand or kind of material.

Bigger is better with speakers, unfortunately unlike electronics, you cant make speakers small and expect the same performance as top of the line speakers.

I doubt we'll see laptop size receivers ether anytime soon.

Anybody feel free to correct me if im wrong about any of this.

I currently have a Yamaha SP1800 5.1 speaker system. I'm only using 2 mains and the center though. The midrange driver is 2-1/2 inch. I'm using a Yamaha 100w subwoofer that came with it but I will keep using it, it's just the midrange that I want to improve.

It all comes down to quality my friend, make sure you audition speakers first & compare them with other brands so that you end up with something you are really happy with

Your gonna do the 'phantom center channel'? Isn't that the name of that setup?

Not necessarily true...I'd put my Paradigm Studio 20 v5's against a whole whack of bigger towers and they'd come out on top ! I've demoed them to friends who had towers and they were blown away. Build quality is mostly important.
