Default having issue with HDD swap

This is for my roomate/ I have a 60GB that I upgraded to a 320GB. No issues at all. My roomates swapped his last night. However, it does not prompt to do a formatt. It says that it must be updated to version 3.10. It will not let me get past this screen. It says that once i have connected the storage that contains the update, to press start and select at the same time.
Does anybody know why it did this?? My roommate saw me do it and it was easy. He is getting frustrated so i am trying to fix for him while he at work.

When I bought a slim, I tried swapping the HD between the two and I got that message. Was the HD from an old PS3? That could possibly be the problem. What you can do is download firmware 3.10 from a PC, then transfer to a flash drive, but make sure its in the correct folder...PS3/UPDATE/

Then hit start and select.

There could be a better solution, but this did work for me.
