Default Speaker Wire

Hello,

I just picked up some "RCA speaker wires" from Home Depot. 14 AWG

I was planning on running them in the walls for my system, however they are not CL-2 or CL-3.

Will this still work? I don't want to waste time doing it if its going to be problems in the future.

Will it work? Yes.

Is it up to fire code? No. If your house is inspected, it won't pass, and you'll have to replace the wire before it will. I believe HD sells CL-2 rated wire by the foot, you just have to ask one of the associates to cut it for you.

Ahh... Very cool... thanks! I thought that CL-2 and all of that had to do with the wires somehow having a bad signal when in the walls Very new at all this!

CL2 has to do with the insulation and the fact that it is slow burning or something. Nothing to do with the quality of the signal.

Lou is correct, it is the designation given to this cable by UL (Underwritters Laboratory) to state in this case the burn time before failure. it has nothing to do with the quality of the conductors inside the jacket, only the rating of the jacket that covers those conductors. also, if you put cables in the wall without this designation, and your house catches fire, if the fire company finds it your insurance company won't pay you f*#@ all, so don't take chances.

good catch Lou!

Thanks for the more thorough explanation!

I read up on the code before, but I guess I only remembered what I felt was most important at the time. The little details that you provided escaped my mind.
