Default Invictus Thoughts/Discussion

Just saw the trailer today in the theatre. Looks like it is going to be a good story.

Take a look for yourself.

I was way thrown off because I thought Gran Torino was Eastwood's last movie, but I was mistaken for last acting role

I believe Clint Eastwood is the Director in this movie. He is not in the movie itself as an actor.

No offense to anyone but this movie looks very boring. I'm guessing it won't be as good as Gran Torino. I bet this movie will be up for an Academy Award nomination if it's not to late.

You know it all depends on what kind of movies one likes.

Many in these forums are into science fiction, and fantasy. Not me, so it all comes down to being all about what
type of movie one enjoys.

INVICTUS should be an inspiring true story. In my opinion, nothing could be better than a true inspiratioinal story.

Hmmm.... A country elects its first black president and his mission is to unite and CHANGE a nation. Does this ring any bells?

Seems like an opportune time to tell Mandela's story. I'm pretty sure I'll see it. Eastwood directing = a sure thing.

Thumbs up

Behind the camera, Eastwood's been on fire since Mystic River. I'm definitely looking forward to it.

Invictus opens today at the theatre. This could be a real masterpiece.
A true inspirational story with Clint Eastwood as director.

Is anyone going to go and see this movie?

I saw it this afternoon.

Needless to say, it was definitely one of my favorites of the year. Morgan Freeman did a tremendous job portraying Mandela, so it wouldn't surprise me to see him get an Oscar nomination for Best Actor. Matt Damon does a pretty good job too as the Rugby Captain Francois Pienaar. I'll just be frank and say that don't go into the film expecting this to be about Nelson Mandela or Francois Pienaar, because even though it focuses on these two individuals in the film, it's really about the 43 million people of South Africa uniting together.

Only complaint about the film:

[Show spoiler]Besides the final Rugby match, they really hurry through the other ones. You don't really get a sense of "oh snap, if they don't win this game, it's all over!" So there really isn't any tension built up until the final match

That's just a small complaint though. After seeing this film it's clear to me that Clint Eastwood can do no wrong.

I agree with Romulus completely except for the spoiler.

Invictus moves right along as it does not waist any time. It is really not all that long of a movie. It is very entertaining from start to finish. With a great performance by Morgan Freeman.

Strongly recommended for family's, with adolescence, and elementry school
age, as it demonstrates great values.

A terribly made film with only two good performances (Freeman and Damon). Much of it is completely laughable.

I'm going to steal a review snippet I read about Old Dogs and say, "If Invictus were a person I'd shoot it in the face."

Default My view

I went to see Invictus over the opening weekend. I have always thought that the perfect role for Morgan Freeman would be to portray Nelson Mandela – and he did a superb job. Although the movie revolves around a sports story which is always doomed to clichés, the main theme of the story was reconciliation, with politics and culture sprinkled in the mix. Smoothly directed by Mr. Eastwood, with yet another strong character turn by Matt Damon, I would give it 3.5 stars out of 5.
