Default Help w/ Rear Projection

Hi, I have a Hitachi 51F500 1080i rptv and earlier this morning when switching to another component something happened to it.

The red, blue and greens do not line up and have waves in them in a few different spots on the screen. The tv has a Magic Focus calibration which I used twice but it did not help. I have never opened up my tv so I am not sure if it has 3 separate bulbs that could be just misaligned but its not like it happened when I was moving it.

I unplugged all components to make sure it wasn't my receiver or a HDMI cable, and plugged in my old PS2 through the front panel on the tv. Made no difference.

Any thoughts would be great, not sure if I will have to replace the tv, or if this sounds like a issue w/ bulbs or maybe the processor? Its older so I dont know how parts are to come by and then probably having to fix it myself, its a beast. Pics are below.

Thanks.

Google convergence ic...you probably will have to call someone for a repair.

My friend had a similar problem, but it was not as bad. He watched the TV for 2 months broken, when he eventually got it fixed he noticed burn in of the yellowish mess.

My father in law has the same Hitachi RPTV (46" model) - definitely a beast with the stand and all. I'm his hero when I push the "Magic Focus" button every few months.

There is a manual grid convergence feature in the TV's menu, but I feel vsidhu nailed it that you will likely need a repair - that's some way-off color convergence going on with your set.

There's never been a better time to consider a TV upgrade if you are in the market.

Thanks for the replies guys, I did try the manual grid as well, but the waves in the horizontal lines could not be corrected.

I looked up convergence and it sounds like thats what the issue is with.

A new tv might need to be on the horizon, boxing day is not far off.

Well if it has to go...start the search for the new toy.

Would you discard it or still check for cost of repair for later?

Well I have called around to a few tv repair places.

It would appear that my tv has 2 convergence chips? I was quoted at $300-350 for the parts and labour. Now that is if it is only a problem with the chip, from what I have read when a chip goes it can damage resistors around it as well. Also that the convergence unit could be damaged as well, I guess thats different than the actual chip. I asked if I might as well replace the bulbs at the same time (they seem to be fine now but figured I might as well to get a longer life out of it) the repair guy said there would be no need if they were fine before this problem as the bulbs should last 20 years, something to do with them not having mercury in them.

So I am a little torn, do I have someone come and fix it and hope its only $350 and that nothing else is wrong... Or do I just replace it... I have talked to other people who have had to get their RPTV fixed and it ended costing much more than they thought.

Yes you do need convergence ICs.

There are 2 of them in the back of your tv.

They would be on very large heat sinks and would have a number like STK392-110

You can buy a pair of them on ebay for like 30 bucks.

If you know someone who can solder you can save yourself a bunch of money.

Yes you will need to check the resistors next the ics as they can act as fuses. Aslo some tvs have pico fuses instead of those resistors that will go bad.

You will then have to re-converge you tv as you threw it off when you tried to adjust it.

300 bucks for the repair is standard price. 300 bucks would go a long way towards a new 1080p tv.

Thanks for the info TVGuy.. I think I might end up having someone come over to fix it up. $300 really wouldnt go too far towards a new tv, this would be a cheaper fix and give me more time to save so I don't have to compromise when I do get a new tv.

I don't know man.... I don't want to see you get stuck with a higher bill than what was first quoted and end up regretting it....
