Default 720p rear projection

I have a Samsung 61" rear projection TV with 720p. With a screen this large at only 720p, is it worth it to buy a Blu-Ray player or DVD upconvert? I can't afford a new TV.

Totally worth it!

Is your TV 720p and 1080i?
What is the native resolution on your 61" TV?

My Samsung HL-R6168W 61" accepts 720p and 1080i and it has a native resolution of 1920 x 1080.
My TV can only accept up to 1080i via HDMI but I think my TV upconverts image to 1080p.

That is true, earlier HDTVs that have 1080p resolution can't accept 1080p due to the HDCP encryption problem with HDMI (Long story), the HDTV with 1080p such as your samsung deinterlaces the 1080i signal to appear 1080p but there should be little visual differecne between 1080i and 1080p especially at farther distances and smaller screens, 1080p signals are actually 1080i signals deinterlaced by the player instead of the television.

Yes it is worth getting a blu ray player even with a 720p resolution TV, looks far better than DVDs on an HDTV, and yes buy an HDMI or Component cable and set it to 720p or 1080i (Just pick which performs better.

Yes it's worth it but here is a chart to see if you would even notice a difference between the two with size and distance.
