Default What is the best reciever value for under $500

Hey All,

I am looking to purchase a new receiver to replace my current Sony STR-DG510. I have a misses approved budget of $500 and I am looking for something that can last at least five years.

It will be connected to two Polk Monitor 40's for the left and right and a Polk CS10 for the center. I have two smaller satellite Polk's and a Polk sub that I will use to fill out the rest of my set from my old RM6750 speaker set. In the future I will get some Polk towers and a new sub and move the monitor 40's to the surrounds eventually.

The receiver will be connected to my PN50A650 Samsung Plasma and have the following components:
  • PS3 Via HDMI
  • Xbox 360 Via HDMI
  • HD Cable DVR Via Component
  • Wii Via Component
What would you guys recommend that would be great for under $500. I was seriously considering the Pioneer 1019AH-K but after reading the 1019AH-K thread on here I am beginning to question myself. I'm still fairly new to receivers so all the info would be greatly appreciated

i personally have a yamaha rx v765 that i got for under $500. i like it alot. your only issue w/ the yamaha would be upgrading the firmware so you could assign an audio input to the component inputs you would plug your wii into. all of my components are hdmi capable so i haven't bothered w/ the assignability. two good things about the 765-1)it's pretty much plug and play, very easy set-up. 2)it has pre-outs for future upgrades.

you've got some pretty good bets under $500. two that would be at the top of my list would be a refurbed marantz sr5003 or an onkyo tx sr607. the refurbed marantz can be found at http://www.accessories4less.com. also, they carry refurbed 607s...

Anyone have any experience buying a refurb from accessories4less? That marantz seems like a great deal.

I priced the Pio Elite VSX-21THX yesterday at 6th Ave for $500. That would be an excellent choice. You have to call and order Elite models over the phone.

there is a 1 year warranty on all the marantz receivers they sell at accessories4less. This is actually exactly what I will be buying once I get my sony sold. There have been a few people on the site that have bought from them and have had no reported issues.

Pio Elite VSX-21THX or the Marantz SR5003. Which one would win in a grudge match of awesomeness?

completely different sounds. the Marantz will be warmer sounding where the Pioneer will be brighter sounding. the Marantz i know is right on the money spec wise, typically pioneers elite line is fairly accurate too. at least within 70-80% of stated(with all channels driven), but it could be pretty dead on too. I haven't seen any test.

Just an FYI callas, but here is a Power-Rating test from UltimateAVMag on the Elite SC-05....they are almost exactly as stated when all 7 channels are driven.....

well i almost put a disclaimer that the SC-XX series was dead on, but I wasn't sure about the entry elites.... I didn't want to over-promise and under-deliver... that is why I said

Anyone know where a good place to go listen to these receivers? I could go to best buy I'm sure they have the elites but I am not sure about the others.

Thumbs up Accessories4less

I have heard nothing but good things about Accessories4less. The products are refurbished by the manufacturer and come with a factory warranty. I would not hesitate to buy from them.

I've heard good things about Abe's of Maine, but be aware if you buy a Pioneer Elite product over the internet you'll have no manufacturer's warranty.

This is correct...Pioneer doesn't have to honor the warranty, and there are no online authorized dealers that sell the Elite line. This is still a pretty good company and for the money I wouldn't have a problem purchasing since Abe's offers a 30 day return policy. You can also buy an extended warranty from SquareTrade pretty cheap and they provide excellent coverage. You would spend much more buying this same receiver from a local dealer.

Ever thought about Denon? Their new 90 lines are very cost effective and they have a TON of options, along with HDMI inputs. I recently bought the AVR-590 (5.1) for a shade over $300 online. Sounds terrific and looks nice as well.
