Default New Receiver Suggestion

I'm looking at getting a new receiver and I have been intently looking at the Yamaha RX-V665BL for $500 and the Onkyo TX-SR607 for about $380. Preferrably I want to spend less than $300 or $350. Does anyone have a comparible suggestion to these two models or any hot deals on them going on?

Thanks so much everyone

You could go for the Yamaha 663 which I found on Amazon for $329.. That comes with pre-outs so you can expand with an amp down the road. Only downside is there are only 2 HDMI inputs.. But that can be fixed with

The Onkyo TX-SR507 is $285.57 on Amazon. It does audio via HDMI. That's the "lowest" I would go with a receiver unless Yamaha, Sony or Pioneer have lowered prices in the last few months. I think the Yamaha 663 toot mentions is a better deal.

The 663 is said to have a better build and thus perhaps more pure power than the 665.....go and check these receiver's threads in the forums. Getting a new or even lightly used 663 for that price is a good deal. As tootall has shown you, you can add multiple HDMI inputs and with the pre-outs, even add more power with an external amp. Good luck!

I would definitely go for the RX-V663. I think you'll be very pleased with the sound for both movies and music. Plus, it has pre-outs for all channels, so you can always upgrade with an external amp down the road.

My Yamaha, the HTR-6080 (RX-V861) is from the previous model year, and it is fantastic. I agree that the RX-V663's amp and power supply is better built than the RX-V665's. At that price, it's a great deal.

Thanks for the input guys, I'll look at the other yamaha because I won't need more than 2 HDMI ports.

Looks like one of my friends can use his discount and get me the 665 for less than the 663...so I believe I will be doing that

My advice is to stay away from receivers that don't have pre-outs. If my first receiver had pre-outs then I would have probably bought an Emotiva 5 channel amp instead of buying the new receiver I have now. It would have been cheaper to get the amp. Don't limit your future options.

I agree 100%

Here is my story and why I agree. First I bought a Sony 710, and it was pretty weak. Then I got the 920 and I got the power I needed, unfortunately it didn't have pre-outs. Now I am regretting not stepping up to the 2400ES. Now I am looking to find either a Yamaha 765/1065 or 863. OR I would go for the Marantz 5003, but new I can only find them for $597, or refurb $449. Plus there is the WAF to consider since this would make 3 receivers in 4 years.

HI,
Look at Amazon. This afternoon The Yamaha 663 was $329 and the 863was $470. Then go to Yamaha.com and do a bullett point comparison with their '65 replacements. When you see the features on the '63's that are left off the new '65's, I believe you will jump on the 863 at $470.

Hi Ive been putting alot of thought into the Pioneer VSX-1019AH-K. Every review that I've seen so far has been positive for a receiver in the budget 500.00 range. I dont realy have alot of expertise in this area and i'm just looking to get the best bang for the buck. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Rayne,

Welcome to the site. In all actuality the Pioneer 1019 is not a very good receiver given that it states it has 120 watts per channel and in fact is actually 29 watts per channel. It does have good features.

You would probably be happier with the yamaha 663 or 863 from amazon.com.

Otherwise if you do not mind buying a refurbished unit, the Marantz 5003 from http://www.accessories4less.com would be the best you could get below $500.

After those, I would suggest that you look at the Sony DN1000 and the Onkyo 607 or Onkyo 160(they are the same receiver)
