Default 2001: A Space Odyssey!!!!!

One word...........................BORING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sorry Q and a few others, but wow this film is a snooze fest like some have said. I actually enjoyed the first 20-30 minutes with the gorillas and then thought it might be ok. But wow after that I had a hard time getting through it. This movie definitely aint for everyone!! Very weird and strange! And yes there was a lot that was unanswered and a lot that was confusing and left u saying......WTF??? Oh well I gave it a shot and I am sorry to say I wont be keeping this bluray! This has me hesitant to watch Blade Runner Q.!! Haha!! I know its not the same type of film but still! I did have some success with a few recommendations like The Thing, and even Schinder's List but this one and to a smaller extint The Fountain were 2 tough ones to watch. I wont put The Fountain in the same category as 2001 because it wasnt nearly as boring but it was very confusing. I would say of all the recommendations this was the worst one! Sorry! Thoughts?? Got Em!!

It's not everyone's cup of tea but I commend you for watching it! Always netflix that stuff if you don't know about the film.

Very sad. One of my favorite films. It was confusing to me the first time I saw it, but once you understand it, it really becomes something special, IMO.

I can't make it through it either but for some reason I still bought it....Still haven't watched it yet though(bought it on Blu-ray about 3 months ago)...I'll need a lot of eggnog & cough syrup to make it through that movie again.

Can I ask how old you are? There was a time before MTV-style editing where movies were coherent and had deliberate pacing... In fact, most movies before 1995 or so are now (unfortunately) considered slow by many in the younger generation. People are so used to video games and Michael Bay editing that anything without that is boring. Which, I guess, may be true, if what you were raised on is the latter. I don't really like all the fast cutting in modern movies, and was raised on movies form the 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s...

Granted, despite all this, 2001 is not a fast paced film... Think of it as the Avatar of it's day. It had never before seen effects and puzzling sci-fi ideas that made people think. In fact, the thing to do was drop acid once Bowman flew into the stargate... even the movie poster advertised it as "The Ultimate Trip"

Ha! Wasn't it in the film "Bobby" where these two campaign workers for RFK were told to go see Planet of the Apes on acid? Funny.....

I didn't like it either but I didn't have acid. I'd buy a lot more movies if I had acid.

"Open the pod bay doors Hal"

Well at least you gave it a shot CZAR. It took me about twenty years to finally really appreciate it.

BTY, have you seen 'Apocalypse Now' yet? And if so what was your opinion on it?

I like it for what it is. I mean its not my go-to film when I am bored and need a quick movie fix, but it is filled with messages, etc. I liked it.

Lots of people don't get 2001, and it doesn't surprise me that someone who needs to put a little catchphrase like "Got em!!" at the end of each and every post is among them.

It's your loss.

I have it in my collection because it is considered ahead it its time and a cinematic masterpeice. I beg to differ but I'm hoping that sometime down the road I will finally understand the film.

Czar- Give Eyes Wide Shut a go next...that movie should at least keep you awake with all the orgies and gratuitous nudity.

BTW I hope that doesn't sound more hostile than I intended. I have had more than my share of "Christmas cheer" today.

The film is actually pretty easy to understand... its all about evolution.

I was dead bored with the region 2 DVD and the Bluray region B.

RIP OFF!!!!!

The sound mix is not the original and I’m sucker for original mixes.

This version is the dts70mm version crated for the re-release
http://www.in70mm.com/news/2004/2001_in_70mm/index.htm

IMDB
4-Track Stereo (35 mm magnetic prints) | 70 mm 6-Track (70 mm prints) | DTS 70 mm (2001 re-release)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0062622/maindetails
http://www.in70mm.com/newsletter/1996/46/dts/index.htm

They could have least preserved the original soundtrack integrity of the original road show. Most parts of the crazy wild dialogue panning has been centred.

A screenshot from the region 2 DVD same version used for the bluray which, I have

If you like me own the laserdisc or rumour has it the first edition DVD region 1 is the same as close to the original over the late versions produced for DVD and yes what waste of sheer bits on Bluray!

It’s all a money scam everyone and the soon you grasp that the better.

A frame from 2001 courtesy of in-70mm

If Bluray as format is going to impressive me! Then they better start getting their act together REAL FAST!

With DVD it would be possible to place the original mix onto the format. The LFE.1 if it had full spectrum sound passed into it, it should output in the same only the sound in not filtered off its full spectrum.

That channel could be used for the signal monaural surround!

The rest of the five channels can be used for the five-screen fronts that will preserved the original soundtrack mix as heard back on its original release, without this silly nonsense of re-mix or botching up classic film.

Bluray can easily do this with its so called lossless sound which is now giving me the sh!ts. It’s all a marketing scam for those who haven’t, the first clue what this film really sounded like!

No I never heard it back then because I was only 2 years old at the time. I know the concept of how 5 screen works.

Anyway with Bluray what they can do is use.

Left for left far front
Left surround for inner-left-centre
Centre for centre front
Right surround for inner-right-centre
Right for far right front
Left rear surround holding the original monaural surround
Right rear surround holding the original monaural surround

And no we don’t want sub bass as the film never carried a sub bass channel in 1968!

All that is needed is simple easy to follow diagram instructions for Bluray players that support 7.1

Or simple re-wiring of the loudspeakers that will take a few minutes to set-up!
Or quicker re-plugging of the RCA phone jacks!

One thing will be needed! Matching five fronts!

This is all very much doable!

They’re just failing to impress me, so far!

If you want to do a matrix-five-screen front it’s really easy to do.

Yup..I got the whole evolution thing when the Ape figured out how to smash things. It's just that long acid trip sequence and the black monolith that gets me.
