Default Starting a Music/Concert BR collection, Suggestions??

There were a few threads I saw but I wanted to ask a few more questions and didn't want to hijack anyones thread..

Im done with my BR build up collection for a while, Now I would like to get a good collection of Music BRs.. So when you guys buy these discs are they live or are they recorded in HD not live, ( I know some say live but do they have alternate options to listen to tracks or the concert without the crowd..

Also how much better does a HD MA concert sound than a standard CD, I wouldnt imagine there is much surround, so is it just clarity??

And last ( for now ) Where is the best place to buy them, Amazon IM assuming? thanks guys and gals and feel free to post whatever you all think is good

John would know best on this subject, but the best I've heard is Within Temptation: Black Symphony, The Police: Certifiable and The Moody Blues.

Good morning mj79,

Most Concert BD's, as the name implies, are LIVE events. Some are recorded using HD cameras, some use film and some have been shot on video. It's a real mish-mash when it comes to the viedeo technology used. Thankfully, the vast majority use Dolby True HD 5.1 and LPCM 2.0, with later (newer) discs having DTS HD Master Audio.

There are no seperate tracks available that eliminate the crowd noise (I prefer to call it crowd atmosphere), so what you get is what you get. Since I went back to a 2-CH setup, I listen to all of my Concert BD's in LPCM (PCM - same) 2.0 and the quality is most certainly comparable to a good quality CD. In fact, often times I switch off the video to just enjoy the music.

When listening to these discs in surround, and depending on the disc, you get a wonderful full surround experience, just like you would a movie. So yes, there is a considerable surround experience to be had.

As far as a best place to find these types of discs, I don't think there is one. Amazon US and UK are probably safe bets for finding a decent selection, but so can your local B&M be a good source. It's kinda hit and miss when it comes to the availability of these discs, so you will have to do some digging at various places.

This link will bring you to my listing of discs that I own so far, although I already have a few more on the way. I'll post and update once I get them

Good luck and enjoy those Concert BD's!

John

I'll tell you what. Concerts were made for bluray, man. There are some amazing concert experiences out there. Here's my list:

AC/DC: Live at Donington
B.B. King: Live at Montreux '93
Bruce Springsteen with the Sessions Band: Live in Dublin
Chris Botti: Live with Orchestra and Friends
Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds: Live at Radio City
Deep Purple: Live at Montreux '06
Diana Krall: Live in Rio
Earth, Wind, and Fire: Live at Montreux
Foo Fighters: Live at Wembley Stadium
Incubus: Look Alive
John Mayer: Where the Light Is
Josh Groban: Awake Live
The Killers: Live from the Royal Albert Hall
Led Zeppelin: The Song Remains the Same
Mariah Carey: Adventures of Mimi
Michael Buble: Caught in the Act
Paramore Live: The Final Riot
The Police: Certifiable
Purple Rain
Ray Charles: Live at Montreux '97
Rush: Snakes and Arrows Live
Shakira: Oral Fixation Tour
Shine a Light: The Rolling Stones
Stevie Wonder: Live at Last
Stop Making Sense: Talking Heads

U2: Rattle and Hum
Within Temptation: Black Symphony
Yes: Live at Montreux '03

The one's highlighted are the one's I've been pretty impressed with.

I really need to sit down and play both the Black Symphony CD and Blu-Ray back to back and compare them on my home system. So far I've just listened to the cd in the car and the blu at home.

As for your question, I haven't seen any option for removing crowd noise on the concerts I have.

Thanks everyone for the replies , Very good and helpful

No biggie about the crowd noise or ( crowd ) Didnt mean that how it came out, just basically wondered if they put the standard cd tracks in there as a feature no biggie tho.. I would love to get some good live concerts in blu just to see and hear the quality... The new Rush is a must , <-- big Neil Peart fan

Dave Matthews seems like it would be pretty cool as well.. Thanks again guys, Ill have to look around and see what I can get around here at BB or trget maybe, if not Ill try amazon. There was a good list posted above as well , so What is the Reference Concert Blu to use? ( basically TDK of Concert blus )

I have no idea why I like Classical, ( must be the Music appreciation from band in HS ) But I would love a good Symphony or concert Orchestra cd.. Its tough to find seeing as how I dont like the orchestra as much as a full Concert band, But I suppose I could suffer through a Philharmonic or 2

I just got the blu-ray of ZZ Top-Live From Texas and it is quite nice. A good selection of songs, nice picture, DTS-HD audio and a kick-ass band. I also have a couple of Who blu-rays that I like. I do want to pick up Taking Heads-Stop Making Sense one of these days.

This is now only $10.99 at Amazon. Good disc, very entertaining. Not stellar AQ/PQ, but certainly worth owning.

If you enjoy Leonard Cohen at all, the following Amazon-exclusive Blu-ray is a must:

http://www.amazon.com/Isle-Wight-Amazon-com-Exclusive-Blu-ray/dp/B002LLDTA4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1262049136&sr=8-1

The picture is pretty rough quality, but the performance and state of the music recording is stellar. A magical performance from the Isle of Wight festival.

There is nothing quite like kicking back with a great Blu-Ray concert going. The picture is incredible, but the sound will knock you out of your chair. Some of my demo discs are below. Happy Viewing and Listening.

John Mayer - Where the Light is
Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds - Live at Radio City Music Hall
Chris Botti - Live (With Orchestra and Special Guests)

I have probably watched my DVD of this at least 6 times JUST since the Blu-ray was announced........... If the price ever comes down on it, I'll pick it up! Same with the Clapton/Winwood....... it's never dropped below $22 or so

Here are ones that I own that I would recommend:

NIN: Beside You in Time
Hitman: A Night with David Foster
2L: A Nordic Sound

I haven't had a chance to listen to it yet, but the 'Mystery Flute' is supposed to be good, too.

I'm not sure how much this applies, but I wouldn't mind seeing a Trans-Siberian Orchestra BD concert disc.

I have to agree , really nice sounding Intimate show , I was not sure i was gonna like them "stripped down" but they sound just as full in that setting & the Musicians /singing are all top notch ...
